Integrity.

24 hours after her big win on Tuesday, Joni Ernst was back in uniform.

Here's a story I managed to miss during last week's election hoopla. It's old news now, but I thought I'd share it with you anyway. If you're from Iowa and supported Joni Ernst, it'll make you glad you did. If you're outside the Hawkeye State, but you followed Ernst's campaign, you'll be happy that voters made the right choice.

It seems that, just 24 hours after her win - which itself came on the heels of a packed 24 hour campaign slog - Joni Ernst grabbed her combat boots and got back in uniform. As you know, Ms. Ernst served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and she's been in the National Guard since 1993. The Lieutenant Colonel spent Thursday and Friday training with the 185th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion. From NRO:
“Not many folks know she is in uniform on Thursday and Friday,” Ernst’s husband Gail tells National Review Online, “She does it without fanfare.” A spokesman for the Iowa National Guard, Greg Hapgood, says soldiers don’t “punch the clock.” “We serve regardless of our situations and Colonel Ernst doesn’t want to be treated any differently.”
Earlier this year, Ernst walked away from her campaign for one week in order to drill. This, we're sure, terrified the GOP consultant class, but it speaks volumes about her integrity. It's easy to imagine other candidates, from both sides of the aisle, using a return to duty as some kind of rah-rah photo op. According to the National Review's sources, Ernst wants none of that. As they say, “She’s working to make sure our units are totally combat ready.” Well done, Ms. Ernst.
