Canadian Federal Byelections Reject Climate Alarmism and Social Engineering

Only a few days after provincial voters in Saskatchewan rejected climate alarmism, federal voters from two Canadian byelections in Alberta and Ontario yesterday did the same.

In Alberta's Yellowhead electoral district, Jim Eglinski from the Conservative Party had more than 64 percent of the popular vote with over 80 percent of the polls reporting. Eglinski's nearest rival -- a Liberal Party representative -- was at only 18 percent, with the New Democratic Party (NDP) at less than 10 percent. The Greens did not even nominate a candidate. Over in Ontario's Whitby-Oshawa riding, Conservative candidate Pat Perkins was declared the winner with more than 49 percent of the popular vote and almost all the vote counted. The Liberal Party candidate was at 41 percent, the NDP at 8 percent, and the Greens at only 1.4 percent. Liberal, NDP, and Green parties have all been campaigning vigorously on the enactment of policies to address anthropogenic climate change in the run-up to the byelections and the upcoming 2015 Canadian election. Core to their policies are high levels of carbon taxation, opposition to oil pipelines, and a rapid shift to renewable energy. Bob Rae, the former leader of the Liberal Party, went so far as to claim that “Parliament doesn't need another climate change denier -- vote Liberal and vote for Celina in Oshawa-Whitby by-election” when referring to the Conservative candidate. Coupled to the radical energy system modifications proposed by these opposition parties were corresponding social engineering efforts such as government daycare, guaranteed minimum incomes, and movements away from supporting traditional family values, the rule of law and due process, and a realistic foreign policy. Canadian voters rejected all of these opposition ideas. The Conservative Party has now held 8 of 9 byelections since they won majority government status in 2011. The Conservative Party's mandate moving forward has been repeatedly reaffirmed. The public -- despite the best efforts of the left-wing mainstream media -- simply isn't buying into climate alarmism. Hopefully the Conservatives respond accordingly and engage in renewed efforts to develop Canada's fossil fuel resources, repeal existing regulatory burdens that artificially raise energy prices, and sideline proposed greenhouse gas policies that unnecessarily weigh down the Canadian economy.
