Florida approves satanic 'holiday display' for State Capitol - right next to the nativity

Before we get started, let’s just acknowledge one thing: satanists are a bunch of clowns. Dig into their "religion" and what you'll find that they're really just a bunch of proselytizing atheists who get a kick out of pestering the faithful. They think they're quite clever and that they're making a point beyond "we're a bunch of arrogant asshats," but really, they aren't.

The vast, vast, majority of them do not worship a fallen angel named Satan. In fact they don't really worship anything. Their "religion" is essentially a bogus construct designed to place their microscopic cadre of non-believers on the same footing as the 75-80 percent of the country that self-identifies as some form of Christian. As it says on the satanists' website:

It is the position of The Satanic Temple that religion can, and should, be divorced from superstition. As such, we do not promote a belief in a personal Satan. To embrace the name Satan is to embrace rational inquiry removed from supernaturalism and archaic tradition-based superstitions. The Satanist should actively work to hone critical thinking and exercise reasonable agnosticism in all things. Our beliefs must be malleable to the best current scientific understandings of the material world — never the reverse.

In other words, they're the internet trolls of the religious world.

Despite their general status as a bunch of buffoons, they've had some recent successes on the 1st Amendment front. Most notably in getting horrible, offensive, Ten Commandment displays removed from courthouses and giving school children satanic coloring books. I know. You’re super impressed. Now, they've decided to branch out into poorly-made seasonal decorations. Like the coloring books, this story comes to us from Florida. "The Train Wreck State" has agreed to let the satanists place a holiday display in the state capitol rotunda - right next to the nativity scene and the Menorah. From CBS Miami:

Florida’s Capitol will have a new holiday decoration this year. The Satanic Temple will be among its nativity scenes and secular presentations. ...The Florida Department of Management Services this week approved the proposed holiday display from the Satanic Temple, which a year ago was rejected because the agency said its proposal was “grossly offensive.” The temple’s entry was one of five displays that got approval to be put up in the first-floor rotunda of the Capitol for the end-of-year holiday period.

The chintzy display features the message "Happy Holidays from the Satanic Temple" and the image of an angel descending into hell. If you're tempted to take to the bait and start screaming about blasphemy, please don't. After all, the Satanists don't really believe in the depiction on their own display, and your offense is what they're after. Don't give them the satisfaction. Just point and laugh. They're not worth taking seriously. If you feel like making an actual argument about this, the better point is that Government is run by a bunch of imbeciles. This is particularly true in Florida, where the state has decided that the satanists non-belief deserves equal time - as does a mariachi band and stack of beer cans that have been fashioned into a "Festivus pole" from the sitcom "Seinfeld." I guess that’s how the Satanic Temple defines a “big win.”
