My birthday is on Saturday, which is 12-13-14. This is the last time in our lifetime that anyone's birthday can be expressed in consecutive numbers. Why? Because there are no more months after the 12th month of December, and the years after 2014 will only get bigger.
This makes my 69th birthday special in two ways. First I have lived that long, and secondly, it is expressed in a unique once-in-a-lifetime numeric expression.
I initially did not pay much attention to this, until a friend who was born on the same day pointed out its significance. She thought I should have chartered a plane and flown everyone born on that day to a destination for a once-in-a-lifetime birthday party. I told her I do not have that kind of money, so a birthday card and "happy birthday" wish to everyone born on that special day will have to do.
As I thought about it, I thought I should do something special. First, my wife and I will be out of town, because I did not want a lot of hoopla from family and friends. Gloria and I will have a quiet dinner for two at a five-star restaurant I have already selected. And! They do not know it's my birthday, because I do not want any hoopla from them either.
Maybe this quiet and private side of me is coming out as I get older, since I have been in the spotlight professionally most of my career. Although I'm not done shaking the trees of life, I see the sunset, but I'm not riding into it yet! This is not a farewell.
