Navy creates robotic underwater drone that looks and swims like a shark

There won't be many but, when Skynet becomes self-aware and tries to wipe out humanity, there will be a few survivors. They'll have to figure out how to live in a new world - one where they are constantly hunted by the machines - until they can turn the tide against their metal overlords. If they're looking for a place to hide, they'd better stick to the planet's underground bunkers because - thanks to the Navy's new robot shark-drone - the oceans will not be safe.

It looks and swims like a shark, is about five feet long, weighs a hundred pounds, and it's been given the totally-not-creepy name "GhostSwimmer." It's also pretty amazing. Unlike traditional underwater craft, it propels itself like a fish, using its tail to generate momentum. It can be remotely controlled via tether, or - if the Navy is feeling "saucy," it can be released with a set of instructions that allow it to carry out missions autonomously. The only caveat is that, currently, it has to surface to communicate. No word if it actually plays the JAWS theme through a set of onboard speakers. That may be an aftermarket add-on or something. Serisouly though, GhostSwimmer (which is most definately NOT pictured at the top of the page) is a fascinating bit of tech. Once it's perfected, it could be tasked with such benevolent duties as inspecting the hulls of ships for damage, search and rescue, or even recovery of lost gear. Heck, since it can operate in as little as a foot of water, you could even imagine this thing protecting civillian beaches from actual sharks. Of course it could also be used to deliver ordinance against enemy ships, detect underwater mines, spy on foreign naval bases, infiltrate harbors, destroy or tap underwater power and communication cables, etc. If they can get it to run quietly enough, it will appear to be nothing more than a medium-sized fish. "Stealth" is built in. All it needs is a frickin' laser beam on its frickin' head.
