Romney inches closer to a run - seeks the support of John McCain

If you're a political tea leaf reader, it's been a good six months since you had your first night terrors suspicions that Mitt Romney had his eye on 2016. My personal hunch is that he's a guy who feels like he got burned - badly - in 2012, and he's eager to prove that he can go all the way. He obviously wants the job, he's been quietly rattling the sabre for a while now, and it looks like he's finally ready to make it official.

Last Friday, we learned that he had admitted his interest to potential donors. Now, he's taken the all important next step. If you're a guy who alienated the conservative base during your last run - and lost because 3 million registered Republicans stayed home - it's time to make sure you have the right support lined up for your next attempt. As the National Journal reports, that means Romney is reaching out to conservative hero John McCain. .....Wait. What now?
Mitt Romney placed a phone call to 2008 Republican presidential nominee John McCain Tuesday, a sign he is attempting to recapture his support before launching another bid. "He told me he is seriously considering it, and we discussed issues and friendships and things like that," McCain told a scrum of reporters on Capitol Hill. "We had a long conversation. We are very good friends." McCain wouldn't divulge details of the conversation, but he did say he told Romney he understood wanting to run again for the White House.
That sound you hear is 3 million staunch conservatives throwing up in their mouths. ...But, look at it from Mitt's perspective. If your hope is to be the centrist alternative to Jeb Bush, it only makes sense that you'd seek the support of the "maverick" king of the middle.
