One of my absolute favorite things on TV is a segment of the Jimmy Kimmel show which he calls "Lie Witness News." Basically, he makes up a piece of news, then sends a camera crew out into the streets to see what people think about it. I'm not sure if it's because they're stupid, or if they just want to be on TV but - without fail - he finds people who are 100% confident in their knowledge of fake current events.
Previous examples included the insensitivity of Hollywood making a Godzilla movie so soon after hundreds of thousands died tragically in the "real Godzilla attack" and showcasing folks who were eager to applaud an Obama State of the Union speech that never happened.
Last night, he wanted to know what people thought of the "this morning's new Martin Luther King Jr. speech." Depending on how you look at things, the responses are either hilarious or completely depressing.
7 people - out of 14 - claimed that they tuned in for Dr. King's brand new address....
"I was shocked. I mean how? How could it happen? I hadn't heard him talk in a while" Might be the greatest wrong answer in history.
Oh, just for fun, here's the Godzilla and SotU clips:
