The Magna Carta was signed at Runnymede. In response to this, Surrey artist Alan Perriman’s ‘Runnymede Ghosts’ exhibition from June 12 to June 16 TBC will showcase paintings that celebrate the variety of environments that exist at this historic location. It will also explore some of the changes and the traces they have left. “These paintings reveal that with a little knowledge it is simple to imagine how the landscape looked from pre-history to modern times without ever losing sight of what it is today,” says Alan. “Viewed as a whole, these traces and clues reveal how man-made Runnymede is and how vulnerable, resilient and important it is today.” Alan’s exhibition will cover the majority of the ground floor where eight substantial pieces of his work will feature in a modern atrium between the main entrance of the university and the location of the university's main festivities for the week around Magna Carta. The Magna Carta was signed in June 1215 between the barons of Medieval England and the power of the Catholic Church. It was the first document imposed upon a King of England by a group of his subjects, the feudal barons, in an attempt to limit his powers by law and protect their rights. www.alanperriman.co.uk
