Liberty Counsel Defends Marriage in Nebraska

St. Louis, MO - "Plaintiffs have not provided sufficient reasons for dismantling the granite foundation of marriage and replacing it with the shifting sand of an undefined union of people...based upon an emotional bond," Liberty Counsel told the federal appeals court in an amicus brief yesterday.

"When Nebraska memorialized marriage as the union of one man and one woman in its Constitution, it acted in accordance with millennia of history in which marriage has been recognized as the unique, comprehensive union of a man and a woman," Liberty Counsel told the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. Natural marriage is the "foundational social institution upon which the future of the state and the nation depends." "To now hold that the Nebraska Constitution's memorialization of marriage as the union of one man and one woman is unconstitutional would not only contradict this court's own precedent, but would hold that billions of people in every government and major religion worldwide, as well as every state in the union from the founding until 2003, were irrational in their universal support of natural marriage. Such a conclusion is absurd on its face," Mat Staver, Founder and Chairman of Liberty Counsel, told the court. Liberty Counsel is calling Christians to unite in fasting and prayer on April 23, 24, and 25 before the United States Supreme Court holds oral arguments on a similar case from the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals on April 28th.
