Washington, DC-Today, as the Supreme Court hears oral arguments on marriage, a diverse group of the faith community has come together to warn the Court not to cross the redline of natural marriage.
On Saturday, the National Organization for Marriage hosted the third annual March for Marriage. Liberty Counsel joined over 10,000 believers, mostly Hispanic and African American, who came to Washington, D.C., to defend natural marriage. Mat Staver, Founder & Chairman of Liberty Counsel, and a diverse group of religious leaders spoke about the importance of natural marriage."This is a line we cannot, and will not cross," Staver told the enthusiastic crowd.
Mat Staver and Deacon Keith Fournier co-drafted the Defend Marriage Pledge, which reads in part, "Our highest respect for the rule of law requires that we not respect an unjust law that directly conflicts with higher law. A decision purporting to redefine marriage flies in the face of the Constitution and is contrary to the natural created order. As people of faith we pledge obedience to our Creator when the State directly conflicts with higher law. We respectfully warn the Supreme Court not to cross this line." Last week, Staver wrote about the Supreme Court case, the Marriage Pledge and unjust laws in the Stream.
"I pray the Supreme Court will allow states to recognize natural marriage. That would be a great victory for truth, but it would not end the fight," Mat Staver said. "Neither the Supreme Court nor any state has the authority to redefine the natural created order of marriage. Marriage is no more a state's rights issue than is slavery or the law of gravity."
"The faith community will not merely wait to receive a few crumbs from the High Court table. Marriage is between a man and a woman. This is an easy decision. The Constitution gives no right to redefine marriage into something it cannot be. If the Supreme Court cannot get this simple fact right, then the American people will lose confidence in the Court and the Court will lose its legitimate authority," said Staver.
"We will stand united together in defense of marriage," Staver vowed. "While people of faith have endured many things, redefining marriage is a line we will not cross."
