GOP debate #1: Issues and answers, or jump on Trump?

With the first Republican presidential debate just a week away, Donald Trump's surge in popularity as a candidate has heightened the anticipation of what might happen. Most media people are wondering if Trump will be a pit bull or just a mild-mannered bulldog.

No one knows, and no one can predict what will happen. Here's what we can predict: The other nine candidates on the stage have been advised to attack Trump with a pre-determined set of zingers to get attention and to be remembered. The smart candidates will not employ this tactic. Instead, they should pivot to specific solutions to the problems embedded somewhere in the questions they are asked. But the candidates who have been well coached will not resist the temptation to attack Trump since he is leading in most polls. Donald Trump has said he has no debate coach, and does not want one, because he has to be who he is - Donald Trump. Therefore, we can at least expect some non-politically correct responses from Trump, and the usual milquetoast narrative from the other candidates. The candidates who do deviate from the usual political narrative will create a little bit of separation between them and the other candidates, which is badly needed in a crowded Republican field. We can also predict that most of the media coverage will not focus on the substance of what candidates say, but rather, on the most entertaining sound bites and gaffes. That's what they do to try and boost their ratings or readership. So the viewing public should draw their own conclusions if they can watch the entire debate. Otherwise, the media are going to tell you what they want you to perceive about the candidates. That's what they do. I know that's not right, but that's the way it is in a media-manipulated society. No one is even talking about a debate among Democrats yet, because they do not have any serious challengers to Queen Hillary. At least the Republicans have many good candidates. The Democrats have none. Regardless of which candidates make the main event on August 6 in Cleveland, Ohio, there will be some fireworks and some surprises. I just hope the voters learn something.
