Life Is An Orchestra

What is there to say when someone decides to snuff out the lives of innocent people? How should we react to liberals whose only solution to problems is more government and less freedom? How do you answer a president that is highly sensitive to any Muslim discrimination, but won’t acknowledge that the Oregon killer singled out Christians? How do you convince people that much of this nation’s problems stem from a breakdown of the culture, a collapse of the Judeo-Christian principals upon which this country was founded?
This nation has resolved that God no longer has a place in its life. I don’t need to show proof, it’s everywhere. I refuse to be the “media expert” or the politician who thinks they have all the answers, but I will share what I know to be true… God is real and works in the affairs of both people and nations. The will of God and man often clash. But, without free will mankind cannot have a relationship with God. Unfortunately, God, at times, lets us have our own way and allows us to reap the whirlwind in the process. God desires people, not robots. Life is finite. It is brief, sometimes all too brief, but it has purpose and God has a plan. We can’t know what that purpose is until we step into eternity. Until such time, the desire to love, nurture and create needs to overcome the desire to destroy. We should not fret but take comfort in God’s sovereignty.

I am very fortunate in this life. I’ve been happily married for over 28 years, a professional pilot for over 40 years, having sat at the controls of everything from two-seat trainers to jumbo jets. I’ve been a fire pilot for 22 of those years and had the privilege of flying with some of the finest fire pilots in the business. I’ve also been a private investigator and a professional musician. I’ve played guitar, sax and Hammond organ with the likes of Chuck Berry, Wilson Pickett and many other acts that most young people wouldn’t even know…”the Beatles? That was Paul McCartney’s other group, right?” And in my even younger days, played in my high school orchestra. Nothing taught me about life better than that high school orchestra. I played French horn and saxophone and loved every minute of it. Makes no sense you say? Let me explain: When we learned a new piece, I was only given my part. When I practiced it, it wasn’t music I could hum or even remember. But, when I played it with the orchestra, it was gorgeous. It fit beautifully. Life is an orchestra. We all have a part to play. Many of us don’t think our parts are memorable or even musical, but every part is essential. You may never hear the entire opus in this world, but it is being heard in Heaven. Know what part you play best. Learn it and learn it well. Pay attention to the Conductor. Stay in tune and remember…there are no solo acts.
