Alan Grayson: If Ted Cruz is elected president, I'll sue

Hey, why not? In addition to being a bomb-throwing liberal, Alan Grayson's pedigree is as a trial lawyer. Suing because he's mad about something seems pretty natural for a guy like that. And since Democrats have treated the last three congressional elections as largely illegitimate - favoring executive actions by Obama to get around the "obstructionist" yet duly elected majorities - why not seek a way to throw out the election of a Republican president? Especially delicious, of course, is that this is all based on the birther nonsense that they find appalling when it's aimed at Obama, but can't embrace quickly enough when Ted Cruz is the issue:

Lamenting the “appalling choices” Republicans have to choose among, Grayson told Colmes the Republican race “resolved itself into this weird reality show.” “It’s not ‘The Biggest Loser’ that they’re choosing, it’s ‘The Biggest Bigot,'” Grayson said challenging Colmes to show him one candidate “who represents the exception here.” “In a sense, I guess, Cruz is not technically that way — because technically he’s not even an America,” Grayson added. “His mother was born here, so I guess like [President Barack] Obama,” Colmes replied adding, “it’s interesting to me that the people who had a problem with Obama’s birth certificate don’t have a problem with Ted Cruz, who literally was born in another country and renounced his Canadian citizenry.” “The Constitution says natural born Americans,” Grayson said. “So now we’re counting Canadians as natural born Americans? How does that work?” “I’m waiting for the moment that he gets the nomination and then I will file that beautiful lawsuit saying that he’s unqualified for the job because he’s in eligible,” he continued. “Call me crazy but I think the President of America should be an American.”
Not to take this too seriously, but I know there are a lot of people who think you have to be physically born on U.S. soil to be a "natural-born citizen." You don't. To be a natural-born citizen means that your citizenship arises from the circumstances of your birth as opposed to your having to go through a naturalization process later on. One way to achieve that is to be born on U.S. soil. Another is to be born outside the U.S. to at least one citizen parent, as Cruz was. I sort of hope Grayson actually tries it, since it would be satisfying to a) see him humiliated; and b) see this silly question finally clarified by the courts. But I doubt he would, since he surely understands he would have no chance. As with most of what Grayson does, it's just bluster desisgned to make the left-wing base applaud, since you can't serve in Congress forever and a gig with MSNBC would be pretty attractive for a guy like Grayson assuming that mess of a network still exists when the voters in his district finally come to their senses once and for all.
