Knee-jerk reaction to a tragedy

We are doing what we do best, giving a knee-jerk reaction to a tragedy. Internet websites, news programming, talk show segments, print media news stories and opinion pieces are monopolized by the discussion of gun ownership.

When Congress starts considering new bills later this month, no less than 10 pieces of legislation will be introduced to limit the ownership of firearms. There is no bill being introduced to address mental illness. Because of the stigma, the elusive nature, the lack of accessible services, the lack of family support, the lack of decent insurance coverage, there is no discussion or legislation to address this side of the solution. We instead talk about tampering with the Bill of Rights rather than having an honest discussion and taking some reasonable steps to fix the root of the problem. It is angry, sick, disconnected people who commit headline grabbing, suicidal crimes. No doubt these folks should not have access to guns or knives, explosives, shoe laces, stones, poison, cars, scissors, bows and arrows, and more. But depriving all citizens will not stop crime and it will send a whole societal activity underground. Is that really what we want to accomplish? I don't think so. We want to help the mentally ill thereby protecting ourselves. Victoria Vaughn
