May Vehicle Sales Spring Industry Forward



TORONTO – Auto sales in May advanced solidly by 5.7% in May compared to last year with 195,571 vehicles sold last month. Year-to-date sales through May are 2.9% higher than last year. While consumer confidence dipped 2.6 points in May, the confidence level was still 6.6 points higher than May 2013. For a fifth straight month in 2014, vehicle sales were well ahead of the historical 5 year sales for the month of May with sales up almost 20% over the May average.
The volume sales leader for the month was Ford, with sales of 31,747 units. On a percentage increase basis for the month, Jaguar Land Rover once again came in first with a sales increase of 40.4%. The best-selling truck in May, once again was the Ford F- Series pick-up with sales of 12,592 units, while the best-selling passenger car remained the Honda Civic, with sales of 7,185 units. Trucks continued to be responsible for a significant chunk of the growth, with truck sales rising 12.1% to 111,035 units while passenger car sales fell 1.7% compared to last May. Overall truck sales in came in at 56.8% of total sales, compared to 53.5% last year. For members of the Global Automakers of Canada (GAC), overall sales were once again, up higher than the market (6.2%) for May, with member truck sales ahead 11.5% while passenger car sales advanced 2.9% . Overall sales for GAC members were 106,078 units.
