Another casual Obama-Gorbachev meeting

There were no pictures of Obama and Gorbachev together, but Gorbachev attended the address and Radio Free Europe has the photograph to prove it.(here). The beaming smiles of Barack and Michelle Obama gave lie to the lukewarm reception by the Russian graduating class. Pavel Palazhchenko, head of the Gorbachev Foundation press service had this to say about this morning’s Obama-Gorbachev meeting: “That meeting between Gorbachev and Obama was short but interesting.” “Palazhchenko was quoted by Radio Mayak as saying. “They talked and obviously showed interest in each other and agreed to continue talks,” he said.” (en.rian.ru/world.com, July 7, 2009). All media reports on the event stated that “Gorbachev and Obama first met in Washington in March 2009.” But we know that meeting was written off by White House spokesman Robert Gibbs as an impromptu run-in. “The president tends to roam around the larger (White) House and sometimes walks into meetings that weren’t previously on his schedule.” In this case, Obama’s roaming around discovered his own Vice President Joe Biden in discussion with Gorbachev on ways to reduce nuclear arms in both Russia and the USA. To buy Gibbs’ story, you never know who you might run into while roaming at large about the White House. That’s their story and they’re sticking to it. Meanwhile, we can take it at face value that Obama was meeting for the first time with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin today and that the pair really did drink tea from an official samovar. Obama came into the White House with a closetful of mentors, including Saul Alinsky. Is Gorby Obama’s official mentor for Obama’s Russia’s Reset Button? Itinerary
