“The state has no business in the bedrooms of the nation” – and other lies

The beleaguered Toronto City Councillor, TTC Chair and former candidate for mayor Adam Giambrone has a partner, Sarah McQuarrie. The word “partner” is a trendy elitist term for common law wife. So when one of his supposed many girlfriends, Kristen Lucas, went to the Toronto Star and told all, it created a scandal. Giambrone dropped out of the race for mayor and then did what all fighters do – he ran to France.

But he has refused to do what is more important than running for the top job; he is staying on as chair of the TTC. Mayor David Miller, who was in Ottawa saving the planet when the scandal broke, returned and supported his Sycophant in Chief, the guy who refers to him as a god, and made the argument that Giambrone’s private sex life is of no concern to anybody; the state has no business in the bedrooms of the nation. The government having no business in the bedrooms of the nation is perhaps Pierre Elliot Trudeau’s most famous utterance. And, like many other words that emanates from the lips of politicians – it was a lie. If anyone really believes that the state has no business in peoples’ bedrooms, or is unsure, there is a simple way to test it. 1. Go into your bedroom and lock the door. Make sure that you have a computer with Internet access in there with you. 2. Get out your credit card and look for some child pornography sites. When you find one, download a few images. 3. Call the police and tell them what you’ve done. Make sure to stress to the nice officer that he or she is part of the state so there is nothing they can do about it. 4. Call Mayor Miller collect from jail and tell His Worship that he is absolutely correct when he says the state has no business in private bedrooms. Then tell him to get the hell down there and post your bail. The reality is there are all kinds of things that can be done in the country’s bedrooms that the state has an interest in. It was and out and out lie. And it wasn’t the only lie that Trudeau told. Does anyone really think that he said “fuddle duddle” in the House of Commons? In fairness to the late prime minister, not everything he said was a lie. It’s hard to disprove his prescient statement that, 50 feet away from Parliament Hill, MPs are nobodies. But unlike the downloading child pornography example, no one is suggesting that Adam Giambrone broke the law. He has admitted to having sex with other adults albeit in the case of Kristen Lucas, just barely an adult. But while his sexual activity is a private matter it has made it into the public realm, thanks to Ms. Lucas. Taxpayers of the city of Toronto cannot and should not simply ignore what the scandal shows about Giambrone’s ability to head the TTC simply because it surfaced via a sex scandal. For example, it was revealed that he and Ms. Lucas had sex on the couch in his office. Apart from the fact that the taxpayers will probably be on the hook for a new couch, Giambrone cannot seriously deal with TTC problems such as ticket takers sleeping on the job. He will just be laughed at. His communication with his girlfriend via text message that left an electronic trail for the Toronto Star to confirm what Ms. Lucas told them showed a lack of judgment that stands out, even in this city council. Should someone of Giambrone’s complete lack of judgment be allowed to stay on as the head of public transit in Canada’s largest city? More importantly the fact that it appears that he told Lucas confidential information about the impending fare increase that allowed her and anyone she told to immediately begin hording tokens is proof positive that he is too immature to be trusted with any responsibility within the city of Toronto. This fact needs to be investigated and Giambrone should be removed in the interim. None of this can be swept away by simply repeating Trudeau’s false dictum that it’s none of the state’s business. When the likes of David Miller focuses on the sexual aspect of Giambrone’s conduct, the purpose is simply to defend the indefensible. Another political lie that is currently circulating is that Ontario is getting a harmonized sales tax in July. As Newstalk 1010 Bill Carroll rightly pointed out last week, it is not a harmonized tax. Harmonization implies that the two taxes will simply be combined. It’s really a new tax on services and on some goods. Instead of calling it the HST it should be called the NTSGS; the New Tax on Some Goods and Services. The state has no business… and the HST; they’re just ways to attempt to fool the masses.
