Tradespeople in Ontario will now have to pay membership fees annually to the McGuinty Liberals’ College of Trades and be forced to join this unnecessary and secretive bureaucracy. On top of this membership fee, tradespeople will also be required to pay additional fees directly to the College. The McGuinty Liberals have decided to give trades employers a one year holiday from the trades tax in an effort to silence the opposition to this job killing tax. Tradespeople feel that paying these fees will result in an increase to the cost of their services, whether it be in construction, getting a haircut or getting your car serviced. On behalf of all tradespeople and employers MPP Dunlop has publicly opposed these outrageous tax membership fees and fully supports PC Leader, Tim Hudak’s commitment to abolish the College, as released in the PCs latest white paper, An Agenda for Growth.

Quotes:

“Last week the McGuinty Liberals flip flopped on its decision as to who will have to pay this trades tax announcing now all tradespeople will have to pay and today they announced exactly how much they will be taking from the pockets of Ontario’s tradespeople. I find it outrageous that tradespeople, like journeypersons will now face a 600% increase in fees.” - Garfield Dunlop, MPP, Critic for Skilled Trades for Apprenticeship Reform “Every day it seems that the McGuinty Liberals are changing course, instead of concentrating on promoting trades and creating jobs, they are busy putting up roadblocks against hardworking Ontarians. Tradespeople deserve respect and its time the McGuinty Liberal’s started telling the truth.” - Garfield Dunlop, MPP, Critic for Skilled Trades for Apprenticeship Reform “The reality is that this trades tax will cost tradespeople more to do their jobs, employers more to create jobs, and consumers more for a range of services. And the money is all going to support another layer of government bureaucracy that no one needs or wants.” - Sean Reid, Chair, Ontario Construction Employers Coalition
