NYT Reporter: White House is “So Much Cockier” Than in 2011

While being interviewed on Sunday’s Meet the Press about the fiscal cliff, New York Times White House correspondent Helene Cooper said that she noticed that the White House has a completely different attitude about debt negotiations with the Republicans than they did in 2011:

I think when you talk about the feeling at the White House, there’s a palpable difference now compared to 2011, the summer of 2011. They are so much cockier right now at the White House than they were a year and a half ago when they were doing this.
That’s due in large part to the election, which not only gave Obama a second term but also saw the Senate and House become a little more Democratic. Cooper said this attitude means that the White House will not negotiate against itself by putting out more proposals. They don’t want to repeat what they claim happened in 2011, which is that Obama made concession after concession to the GOP, but still failed to solve the problem. If a New York Times reporter calls the White House “cocky,” then it’s clear they have really gone over the top.
