Another Obama proposal for pretend spending cuts

How can you tell President Obama is not serious about dealing with the nation’s fiscal challenges? Easy.

The president is now claiming he wants to deal with the deficit with a deal that will – over 10 years – raise tax revenue by $1 trillion and cut spending by $1 trillion. Now let’s leave aside that they just raised taxes, and that this hardly makes a dent in the huge deficits we’re running. Let’s just look at what Obama is saying about spending. A reduction in spending of $1 trillion over 10 years is $100 billion a year. Is he serious about that? No. How do I know? Easy. The debt ceiling deal he cut with Republicans in the summer of 2011 included automatic spending cuts to happen over a period of time, and the next one coming up is in March. It would trigger an immediate spending cut of $109 billion. What is Obama doing? He is pulling out all the stops to prevent this automatic cut from going into effect, on the grounds that it would hurt the economy. And yet this is the same guy who claims he wants to lock in $100 billion in spending cuts, on average, every year for the next 10 years? What do you think he’s going to do the next time an automatic cut is scheduled to go into effect? The same thing he’s doing now! Stop it from happening! If Obama was serious about cutting spending, he would cut it now – not negotiate some pretend deal for future spending cuts he’ll just come back and find a way to cancel. Obama is not serious, which is why our fiscal problems become more serious by the day.
