On March 15 the good folks of the National Bloggers Club hosted a private visit by Senator Rick Santorum at this year’s Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).

The subject of most of his comments as well as the questions asked centered around the new Pope and the Catholic Church. One of his replies was particularly interesting and it wasn’t just interesting because it was an answer to a question I asked the Senator myself. I asked about how the media is and/or will treat the Catholic Church on the issue of “reform” as the new Pope takes charge of his world-wide flock. Santorum noted that the Church can’t change its spots just because the culture does. The Church is supposed to be teaching truth, not bending constantly to cultural changes. Santorum’s reply:
“They’re going to focus on trying to convince that the Church is making some sort of change ‘because they just have to, they have to bend to the culture.’ This culture is going to change. It’s going to change in the next twenty years, the next thirty years. The Church is not going to change. The Church has been around for two thousand years and some of the worst popes, some of the popes who were the most horrible human beings, Borgia popes, I mean, they didn’t change the teachings of the Church. They did a lot of bad things, but they left the teachings of the Church alone. Why? Because they can’t change, because it’s the truth.”
Please do watch the video below. (My video is a bit dark because from my vantage point in the room, the Senator was standing with a bight window behind him.)
