Politico: Liberals want SOTU to tell the poor they can't help themselves

Politico is a horrendous operation, possibly the worst media outlet that has ever existed. But if you want to know what liberals are thinking, Politico is who they talk to. So sure, why not?
Off-the-deep-end liberals are telling their substance-challenged allies at Politico what they want to hear in President Obama's State of the Union address, and wouldn't you know it? They're wondering when Obama is going to get around to income redistribution! Of course, that priority is cleverly disguised as an effort to address "income inequality." One thing they apparently want is for Obama to deny that your economic circumstances have anything to do with the choices you've made:
But the politician whose fate progressives say is really in the balance is Obama himself. Though the president's promise has them more excited — and even hopeful — than they've been in years, they warn that he'll either follow through with a State of the Union that really starts bringing their response to income inequality to the mainstream or squander his last chance to deliver on the promise of his 2008 election.

"This is the last State of the Union before people can see the sunset," said Marc Morial, president of the National Urban League. "You can frame this. You can talk about things in a lot of different ways, but fundamentally, you're talking about the notion of direction." Progressives say Obama will have to directly address — though likely not by name — recent speeches by Republicans like Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky and Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin that have described inequality as a behavioral problem.
So the income you make bears no relation to how you behave? People who make a lot of money don't engage in wiser or more productive practices than those who make very little? Not only is this notion silly, it is a message designed to deny people power over their lives. If your situation has nothing to do with your own actions, then you can't improve your situation by changing your actions. All you can do is wait for some outside force to come along and change the overall game so you get more - like, say, a politician you can vote for. That's the message of the left. The message of the right is that there's much you can do to change your circumstances, and it starts by taking an honest look at what you're doing now and determining how you can shed old, unwise habits in favor of new, wiser ones. If poor people start believing they can help themselves by changing their behavior - and that they should - Democrats are finished. So when people like Rubio, Ryan and Paul talk about "income inequality" as a "behavioral problem" to use Politico's idiotic vernacular, what that really means is that they're trying to show people in the low-income category how they can get out of that category on their own. In the mind of a movement liberal, that demands a response from the president of the United States. Damn it. You can't get out of poverty on your own! It has nothing to do with you. Only the government can get you out. In their world, everything is about government and everything that ever happens is the result of government policy. Government is their god. People are the subjects. And that's the message they want Obama to send in the State of the Union address. I can almost guarantee he will grant their wish in one way or another. What else is he going to spend all that time talking about? ObamaCare?
