Giving

Giving is mandated by our Judeo-Christian set of beliefs. We each should give according to our ability. Separately, there should be an equal assessment to all since we are all equal human beings. Giving is measured not only in how much money one contributes every year. Giving is also in a listening ear, visiting a sick person, inviting someone to your home, doing good deeds.

Other People’s Money (“OPM”)

The non-profit world is a business. Billions of dollars change hands, the tax write-offs to individuals and corporations are enormous. In an editorial this week, Rob Eshman of the Jewish Journal of Los Angeles writes about an Israeli non-profit that, in the post-Madoff world, finds itself needing to pare down, reduce overhead and cut back in order to survive. “To rebuild, [the organization] is zeroing in on those things it does best, that aren’t replicated elsewhere in the Jewish world.”

Mixed Signals

On Sunday morning I saw a line of people waiting patiently for the doors at SOVA Pantry to open so that they can get food. On the same evening I saw an even longer line of people lined up in Beverly Hills to buy $4 cupcakes “handcrafted in small batches” at Sprinkles. There are over 20 tantalizing flavors to satisfy the sweet tooth, using the freshest ingredients including sweet cream butter, bittersweet Belgian chocolate, pure Madagascar Bourbon vanilla etc. Need any today?

Infiltrating Our Educational System

Two years ago today, following my attending a three-session, 16-hour LA Unified School District (LAUSD) Salary Point Workshop titled "Teaching about the Arab World," I wrote about my experiences of this anti-Israel brainwashing scheme.

Running Away to the Safety of Home

If one were to ask me if leaving one's host country and running away to safety is a sign of weakness, I would answer "how can I help to expedite your arrival?" Jews live in every country around the world, but we have only one homeland – ISRAEL.

My Mother’s Chicken Soup

For two weeks I was sick. I am not sure if it was a virus or if I needed antibiotics. I am sure, though, it was not unique. At first I attributed my condition to the frequent travel back and forth to Jerusalem. I would embark the bus with a t-shirt and get off needing to add two more layers. Constant temperature changes, I thought, were the reason. But then I noticed others had exactly the same symptoms, and they did not visit Jerusalem.

Why Pay for Bottled Water?

Santa Ana conditions in Los Angeles, breezy and sunny in Israel. The last day of January, the winter is absent. The world is experiencing a drought, and we are still watering the sidewalks with fresh, drinking water and fill our landfills with plastic bottles of the latest trend – water.

A Bold New Move – An Investment for the Future

At this very hour, four weeks ago, Israel entered Operation Cast Lead. The following Saturday, on the eighth day of the Operation, Israeli ground forces entered Gaza. Two weeks later, Israel had declared a unilateral ceasefire (2AM on Sunday, 1/18/2009). On Wednesday, January 21st, the IDF Spokesperson sent out the following announcement:

An Opportunity Lost? Ten Days – and Counting!

Fifteen days of constant attention have focused on Gaza. Reality notwithstanding, Israel is perceived as the aggressor instead of the liberator of its residents from eight years of constant bombardment of rockets. Hamas has been elevated to new heights, its usage of its own people as human shields and its targeting innocent human beings on the enemy's side blatantly ignored.

We are All Soldiers on the Front Line

Dear Friends of the Free World, Dear Friends of Israel, We are now into the 14th day of Operation Cast Lead. When I arrived in Israel 14 weeks ago, I did not know that Israel would finally find the courage to respond to almost eight years of rockets fired at it. The perception was that Hizbollah and Hamas can continue their race for armament, that Iran can continue its nuclear program and its calls to the annihilation of the Jewish State, while the world looks the other way and Israel itself has lost its deterrence, its conviction, its will to prevail.

The Winds of War – Experimentations in Good and Evil

On Saturday, December 28th, 2008, Israel started Operation Lead Cast to bring an end to the constant bombardment of its South by Hamas from Gaza. The following Saturday the second phase of the Operation started, with a land move into Gaza. One Druze soldier was killed at the first stage. Another soldier was killed as the second stage commenced. Today three soldiers were killed and one critically injured by friendly fire.
