TORONTO, June 15, 2010 – B’nai Brith Canada has called for the NDP to strip MP Libby Davies of her leadership roles in the party following remarks she made at an anti-Israel rally stating that the “occupation of Palestine” began in 1948 and in support of a boycott of the Jewish State. Davies, who has a long record of anti-Israel activism, is currently the deputy leader of the NDP and its leader in the House of Commons.

British Advertising Standards Authority decision to ban Israeli use of Western Wall imagery in ads

B’nai Brith Canada has expressed its outrage over a decision by the British Advertising Standards Authority (BASA) to ban an Israeli Government Tourist Office ad promoting Israel which included clips of the Western Wall. BASA’s decision was reportedly based on the grounds that it considered the Western Wall “occupied” territory, as it is situated in the Eastern part of Jerusalem. In a letter to the British High Commissioner in Ottawa, B’nai Brith called BASA’s decision an “egregious insult” to the Jewish community and called for it to be rescinded.

B’nai Brith Canada marks Yom HaShoah with ceremonies across Canada

B'nai Brith Canada is marking Yom HaShoah - Holocaust Remembrance Day - with memorial ceremonies across Canada honouring the victims. Following "Unto Every Person There is a Name" ceremonies last Friday in the Greater Toronto Area, B'nai Brith will be holding similar events in Montreal on Monday, April 12th and in Winnipeg on Monday, April 12th and Wednesday, April 14th. B'nai Brith Midwest Region will also be organizing an Interfaith Yom HaShoah Ceremony in Winnipeg on Sunday, April 18th. In Toronto, the League for Human Rights of B'nai Brith has joined with the Law Society of Upper Canada to host a special commemorative forum on bringing war criminals to justice on Monday, April 12th.

Rise in anti-Jewish hatred documented in 2009 Audit

The League for Human Rights of B'nai Brith Canada today released its 2009 Audit of Antisemitic Incidents, an annual study on patterns of prejudice in this country. In total, 1,264 incidents were reported, representing an 11.4% increase over the 1,135 cases in 2008, and a more than five-fold increase in incidents over the past decade. There were 884 cases of harassment, 348 of vandalism and a doubling from last year in the incidents of violence to 32.
