America and the Family Business Rule

America and the Family Business RuleThere is an old saying in family businesses, “The first generation starts a business. The second generation runs it. The third generation ruins it.” Metaphorically, our American family business is in the third generation. Our Founding Fathers rejected monarchy, oligarchy, aristocracy, theocracy, and formed the United States of America as a Constitutional Republic - the greatest experiment in individual freedom and upward mobility anywhere in the world. What happened?

Selling Socialism to America

Selling Socialism to AmericaSocialism is a tough sell to Americans who evaluate ideas based on facts and a remarkably easy sell to Americans who evaluate ideas based on feelings. The adult world of facts is a foreign land to the infantilized world of feelings where low-info millennial voters currently dwell. The heated political battle between Americanism and Socialism parallels the battle between parents and their children who refuse to grow up emotionally and leave the nest.

The Riddle of Climate Change

The Riddle of Climate ChangeThe Riddle: What climate does climate change change? The Answer: The political climate of course. Let me explain. Pollution and climate change are two separate issues. Environmental pollution is a man-made problem that humans can and should remedy. Taking responsibility for our behavior is a necessary part of civilized life and eliminating environmental horrors like the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is something we all need to support. So far so good.

Coups Cover-ups and Context

Wars We Were Never Meant to Win

Wars We Were Never Meant to WinIt has been over 17 years since George Bush announced the war on terrorism and 47 years since Richard Nixon announced the war on drugs. Does anyone wonder why the most powerful nation on earth has not won either? I do. The current border war and heated debate over the building of a security wall on our southern border sounds disturbingly familiar.

The Furies in Congress

The Furies in CongressIn ancient Greek mythology the Furies are the three goddesses of Vengeance, Jealousy, and Anger. They are the daughters of Mother Earth Gaia and her son Father Sky Uranus. The Furies are infamous for taking vengeance on men and punishing all crimes including breaking the rules of society by striking the offenders with madness. The Furies in ancient mythology dispensed vigilante justice and were the "guardians of the law when the state had not yet intervened or did not exist, or when the crime was a crime of ethics and not actual law." Here is the problem - we don’t live in ancient Greece and we are not characters in a mythological story. We live in the United States of America, the greatest experiment in liberty and individual freedom the world has ever known.

David and Goliath in the Court of Public Opinion

David and Goliath in the Court of Public Opinion The Goliath narrative in 1 Samuel 17 opens with the Philistine army gathered for war against Israel.
"Saul and the Israelites are facing the Philistines in the Valley of Elah. Twice a day for 40 days, morning and evening, Goliath, the champion of the Philistines, comes out between the lines and challenges the Israelites to send out a champion of their own to decide the outcome in single combat, but Saul is afraid. David, bringing food for his elder brothers, hears that Goliath has defied the armies of God and of the reward from Saul to the one who defeats him, and accepts the challenge. Saul reluctantly agrees and offers his armor, which David declines, taking only his staff, sling and five stones from a brook."

Trusting the Untrustworthy

Trusting the Untrustworthy Sir Alexander Fraser Tytler (1747-1813), a Scottish jurist and historian, provides an explanation for why great societies do not survive for more than 200 years:
"A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largess from the public treasury. From that time on the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury, with the results that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship (bondage).”

Trump Derangement Syndrome: A Prelude to Anarchy

Trump Derangement Syndrome: A Prelude to Anarchy The election of President Donald Trump is a clear and present danger to the emotional stability of those living in subjective reality because they cannot tolerate the threat of objective reality that President Trump represents. The clash between subjective reality and objective reality has launched what is now known as Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDR) or more recently Trump Anxiety Disorder (TAD). The incursion of objective reality is so threatening to anti-Trumpers that they break down psychologically and require medication and psychological services.
