Al Franken resigns from Senate
He tried to turn it on Trump and Roy Moore, and he insisted the things that have been said about him are not true. But he’s quitting anyway. He’s trying to make it sound like he’s doing it “for the people of Minnesota” because he can’t represent them while the Ethics Committee process is going on.

I think Democrats threw Franken under the bus as a way of putting the screws to Republicans on Roy Moore

What happens now is that Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton will appoint a temporary replacement who will serve through the end of next year. This really isn’t going to make the Senate better in the short term. Dayton will appoint another Democrat. But if Republicans can run a strong candidate in 2018, possibly former Gov. Tim Pawlenty, this might be an opportunity for a pickup at the end of next year.

Franken’s resignation doesn’t take effect immediately but he says it will happen within the next several weeks.

Can you really take seriously Franken’s suggestion that he did nothing wrong when he’s quitting rather than staying to fight?

I think Democrats threw Franken under the bus as a way of putting the screws to Republicans on Roy Moore. They’ll claim that they cleaned out their wrongdoer and will call Republicans hypocrites if they continue to back Moore. So what happens if Moore wins? Does he go straight to the Ethics Committee and face possible expulsion, based on the Franken standard?
