E pluribus unum---No Longer Applicable in America?

E plurbis unum has traditionally been translated to mean “Out of Many, one” and has been generally accepted as the motto of the United States, where the phrase signifies the diversity of the American people, and the ability of those people to function in unity regardless of individual differences in race, religion, and other considerations. E plurbis unum has long been a source of American pride which demonstrates the virtues of acceptance and tolerance in a democracy. While other cultures and nations resort to violence in order to resolve disputes among themselves, we have taken enormous pride in the fact that in America differences are settled peacefully and without use of force. However, recent events strongly suggest that acceptance and tolerance are no longer widely in style, having been replaced by bitter, personal rhetoric and actions which often seek to destroy or harm other Americans.
For example, although seven months have passed since the conclusion of the 2016 presidential election, the nation continues to be bitterly divided. The new watch word is RESISTANCE, where citizens are roused to the point of violence by politicians who state, “He is not My President” and other equally inane slogans. The boiling rage finally exploded on June 14 when private citizen James Hodgkinson of Illinois showed up early in the morning at a practice field in Washington D.C. where Republican office holders were practicing for a charity baseball game to be held against Congressional Democrats on Thursday, June 15. Hodgkinson, who has a history of anti-Republican internet posts, brought a rifle and handgun with him. He started to fire at the helpless Republicans and seriously injured GOP House Whip Steve Scalise, who remains hospitalized and continues to fight for his life. Hodgkinson's cowardly attack ended when Capitol Police killed him. This grisly scene has sparked widespread debates over gun control, arming members of Congress and related issues. However, the one question no body has the courage to ask is this: Is E pluribus unum---No Longer Applicable in America?
