Lance Wallnau: God is raising up Trump as a 'wrecking ball' for the nation

Just so you know, Donald Trump has not only inspired a rift among political conservatives. He's inspired one among Christians as well. Many high-profile Christian teachers are appalled that so many evangelicals have backed a man of considerable moral failings, especially when he demonstrates very limited understanding of or commitment to the Gospel. On the surface, it seems so obvious: Ted Cruz is one of us, so why would evangelicals reject him in favor of Donald Trump? And yet many did. The question is so vexing it's led some - including people I deeply respect like Dr. Michael Brown - to question whether this means God's judgment is finally coming on our nation for our sustained rebellion against Him.
Then there's Lance Wallnau. He is not a pastor but leads the Dallas-based Lance Learning Group, which trains Christians for impact-making leadership roles. Wallnau is also a very in-depth theologian, and a strong political conservative very much aligned with both the spiritual and ideological thinking of Ted Cruz. Now I realize some of you don't believe God speaks to people (or that He exists at all), and I have neither the time nor the inclination at this momment to try to convince you otherwise. I'll choose instead to share with those of you who are open-minded about such things what Wallnau explained in a recent video and web site post. Wallnau says he received several prophetic revelations from God about Trump. To see the 27-minute video that explains this whole thing, you can go to this link. It's free but you will have to enter your e-mail address. I can tell you I did it two days ago and so far I've not been pelted with any e-mails (and I could always unsubscribe from whatever they want to send if I wanted to). To sum up, though, Wallnau says he was given an image of Trump along with the words "45th president of the United States" and a directive to read Isaiah 45. This passage concerns a non-believing man named Cyrus, who was raised up by God to become a king and to perform certain acts to help God's people. Wallnau goes on to explain that God will sometimes raise up non-believers and confer on them "common grace" (not the grace of salvation but grace to protect and assist in carrying out a mission) so they can be used by him. Wallnau cites past leaders like Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill and FDR as other examples of Cyrus-type leaders.
Why Trump? According to Wallnau, Trump is God's chosen instrument to serve as a wrecking ball against the spirit of political correctness. Buy why not Cruz? Wouldn't he be better suited to the task? Wallnau believes there are two problems with that. The first is that he doesn't think Cruz could have beaten Hillary. The second is that, because everyone knows Cruz is an evangelical, the left and their media allies would have been on high alert at all times for even the slightest twitch made by a President Cruz in the direction of an evangelical agenda. With Trump, Wallnau (and presumably God) believes, they won't see it coming. Plausible? He explains further:
It’s time we understood the connection between Trump and the church. It isn’t his orthodoxy that makes him important to us. Unlike Cruz, he is not an evangelical. It isn’t his ideological conservatism either. He is, in his own words a “practical conservative”. A definition that hardly satisfies the National Review. If it is not his ideology that makes him valuable, what is it the wrecking ball brings? It is one word, (if you are willing to accept it) - COURAGE! His BACKBONE. His willingness to voice his OPINION. The church is choking on fear. Trump, in a strange way, is the antidote. Evangelicals don’t want to be labeled as racist, Islamaphobic, or homophobic, for good reason - they aren’t. But the spirit of political correctness was strangling the life out of the nation’s evangelicals like a giant python until Trump came along. Donald Trump entered the conversation and like a bowling ball - he collided with pins and the tension lifted and refocused on him. In the place of carefully word crafted eggshell communication from oracles like Rubio and Cruz, an elephant named Donald entered, crushing shells under his feet. From the day of his first kamikaze commentary on John McCain till his utterance about vetting Muslims “till we can figure out what the hell is going on here,” he has been a lightning rod to the left, establishment right, two Mexican Presidents, and even the Pope, with the sure promise of more to come now that he is the presumptive Republican nominee. I am for Donald Trump but I didn’t pursue the normal vetting process. I received Donald Trump as a divine assignment. The normal way to evaluate candidates is to compare them to one another. That is why I sympathize with followers of Ted Cruz. He was the logical evangelical conservative choice. I believe Ted will do more to shape America in the future, perhaps as a Supreme Court Justice. As I think about what is happening in America the thought keeps coming to me… Donald Trump is Heaven’s choice for the chaos that is coming!
Here is what Isaiah 45 tells us about God's call of Cyrus:
1 “This is what the Lord says to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I take hold of to subdue nations before him and to strip kings of their armor, to open doors before him so that gates will not be shut: 2 I will go before you and will level the mountains[a]; I will break down gates of bronze and cut through bars of iron. 3 I will give you hidden treasures, riches stored in secret places, so that you may know that I am the Lord, the God of Israel, who summons you by name. 4 For the sake of Jacob my servant, of Israel my chosen, I summon you by name and bestow on you a title of honor, though you do not acknowledge me. 5 I am the Lord, and there is no other; apart from me there is no God. I will strengthen you, though you have not acknowledged me, 6 so that from the rising of the sun to the place of its setting people may know there is none besides me. I am the Lord, and there is no other. 7 I form the light and create darkness, I bring prosperity and create disaster; I, the Lord, do all these things.

Wallnau's basic proposition is not really that radical. Secular government is under God's sovereignty just like everything else, and surely He puts people in positions of authority that do not acknowledge Him. Haven't you ever prayed to God that he would use or influence a person who was not a believer to achieve a certain outcome? Maybe your boss is a non-believer but you wanted a raise, or simply not to be fired. So you prayed for it. If God could use your non-believing boss in that way, why couldn't He use Donald Trump as the wrecking ball we need against the corrupt direction of our government? The answer, of course, is that God can do whatever He wants. Wallnau urges evangelicals to get over the whole thing about how Trump is not one of us, and recognize that God may be working in a way that's entirely counter intuitive to what we expect. I would also add this point: One prophecy Wallnau says he received from about Trump is that his success or failure will be determined by the counsel he receives. I would see that as a call to action for conservatives who are either running for the tall grass or making grand moral pronouncements about how they can't and won't support this man because he's too objectionable for all sorts of reasons. You can look at it that way, or you can recognize that Trump just might be called to govern this nation - and if he is, it's going to need help. Who do you want it to come from? Clear-thinking people? Or those who might affirm Trump's worst instincts because those who could have genuinely helped him were unwilling to be associated with the man? You can accept or reject what Lance Wallnau is saying here, but you should at least recognize that he makes his case thoughtfully and that he backs it up with Scripture. I know well that God doesn't always operate in the way that seems logical to me, because God is smarter than I am. He's smarter than you too. So if he told Lance Wallnau what His plan is, don't be so sure it can't be true just because it's not what you expected. After all, solving the mess we've got ourselves in will require a more brilliant solution than you or I can probably come up with.
