  • Indian Government adopts innovative technology that will prevent the worst effects of natural disasters
  • Mobile phones – now in wide circulation across the globe – are being used to warn of impending natural disasters
A new innovative mobile phone system which could save millions of lives from the devastation of natural disasters will be launched in India within weeks.
This technological breakthrough from RegPoint means that mobile phones will now be used to alert millions of people to impending perils such as tsunamis and typhoons. RegPoint are showcasing the unique early warning system at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona from 24th to 27th February 2014. The service will be launched in India in April 2014 after the Indian Government supported the initiative. The Indian National Center for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has recognised how imperative an effective early-warning system is and has worked with RegPoint to put one in place.
RegPoint are working to encourage governments around the globe to team up with mobile network providers and capitalize on the revolutionary technology. This cheap and simple early warning system could prevent the horrifying death tolls at the hands of mother nature. With governments in at-risk areas supporting the initiative, Western tourists and business people could also access severe weather and earthquake alerts on their mobiles while on their travels. As many as 7,000 tourists, mostly from Europe, lost their lives in the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. They died without warning. On 26th February (Wednesday) Sophia Salenius, creator of the award-winning RegPoint disaster early-warning service will address the ECHAlliance Conference at the Mobile World Congress. She will say: “Mobile health is tackling previously unsurpassable barriers. “mHealth can now significantly improve survival rates should a natural disaster occur. “The industry is at the centre of a healthcare revolution but in order to win the fight against what we previously thought was unwinnable, we need the support of governments around the globe. “Governments can save millions of lives and taxpayers’ money by investing in mHealth solutions. The RegPoint warning service has the ability to send SMS messages immediately to all mobile phones in a designated locality, pinpointing precise warnings, guidance or other information to individuals in a specific geographical region before a disaster strikes. It can provide citizens, in the case of a tsunami, with accurate and rapid information on the size, scale and expected time of the disaster, as well as with advice on how best to secure their safety.
