For a little over a week, we've been hearing of an impending shake-up in the Trump White House. Allegedly, the President is furious about leaks, incompetence, the general perception (or reality) that his agenda seems to have stalled if not completely derailed. Are things that dire? Probably not. However, we'd be lying if we tried to pretend that President Trump has been enjoying a smooth month. To put it mildly, things have been a bit "clunky." So, yes, it's likely that his administration is headed for some personnel changes. Today we learned that White House Communications Director, Mike Dubke, is leaving his post.
From Fox News:
Veteran GOP strategist Mike Dubke resigned as White House communications director on Tuesday, Dubke confirmed to Fox News. Asked about reports announcing his exit, Dubke told Fox News, “It is true.” He added: "It has been a privilege to serve this president." Dubke said in a message to friends and associates that his reason for leaving the post was "personal." “The reasons for my departure are personal, but it has been my great honor to serve President Trump and this administration," Dubke wrote. "It has also been my distinct pleasure to work side-by-side, day-by-day with the staff of the communications and press departments. This White House is filled with some of the finest and hardest working men and women in the American Government.”
If past is prologue, a person tends to abandon this sort of position for one of three reasons.
  1. They're given the option to be fired or resign, and they choose "resign."
  2. They've been offered a better gig in the private sector. (a la Jason Chaffetz)
  3. They're sick of the chaos in an administration, and they're getting out before it gets worse.
We've seen examples of all three in recent years, and none would come as a shock in this case. According to Kellyanne Conway, it's entirely possible that Dubke had just had enough.
"I know he's worked very hard here but people in administrations tend to leave on their own volition as well," Conway said. "They find that working 18-hour days are maybe not what's best for them."
That hasn't stopped various mainstream media outlets from making statements about Trump cleaning house.

The question now becomes; is this a one-off, or is this going to be part of a trend. If such departures become common, then the sake-up is indeed underway and you can bank on reason 1 or 3 above. If things go back to normal, than Dubke's probably found greener pastures or, as Conways suggests, he just didn't like where he was. Time will tell. For now, though, headlines which seemingly guarantee that this is step one in a Trump administration implosion are putting the cart before the horse.
