U.S. Department of Justice and the D.C. Swamp

As an enabler of the D.C. Swamp, the U.S. Department of Justice must be drained first, if freedom is to survive in America.

According to a Department of Justice (DoJ) website, a “somewhat enigmatic Latin motto” appears on the official seal of the department: Qui Pro Domina Justitia Sequitur.  Its history, like the history of the seal itself, is unclear.

One literal translation of the Latin is: “For the lady who pursues justice.”  The DoJ website suggests it means “the Attorney-General prosecutes on behalf of justice.”

The Whig interpretation of history would declare that the DoJ is all about justice.

But is it?

Herbert Butterfield (1900-1979), former Professor of Modern History in the University of Cambridge, wrote “The Whig Interpretation of History” between the World Wars, in 1931.  In the Preface to his 131–page book, he explained the meaning of its title in the context of how history is written about a particular era in England’s past.

“What is discussed is the tendency in many historians to write on the side of Protestants and Whigs, to praise revolutions provided they have been successful, to emphasize certain principles of progress in the past and to produce a story which is the ratification if not the glorification of the present.” (p.v)

Once the narrative of Whig history becomes entrenched, it is hard to refute because,

“…the Whig tendency is so deep-rooted that even when piece-meal research has corrected the story in detail, we are slow in re-valuing the whole and reorganizing the broad outlines of the theme in light of these discoveries.”(p. 5)

In other words, once written, Whig history become the settled narrative.

The word “settled” is often used to silence debate. The Church once told Galileo that a flat earth was settled science. Today, the most dogmatic proponents of global warming label it “settled science.” Anyone who challenges something “settled” becomes a “denier.” When Congress passes a controversial law, it becomes “settled law” to its advocates.  (Strangely enough, those quick to call the U.S. Constitution a “living document” are often the same people who characterize new, controversial legislation as “settled” law. Slavery in America was once settled law – until it wasn’t.)

In short, Whig history is bent by bias.  In Professor Butterfield’s words:

“The whig historian has the easier path before him and his is the quicker way to heavy and masterly historical judgments; for he is in possession of a principle of exclusion which enables him to leave out the most troublesome elements in the complexity.” (pp. 28-29)

When some of the “most troublesome elements in the complexity” surrounding the recent history of the DoJ are considered, the merit of the motto fades.

Most recently, is the Mueller investigation into the alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia a pursuit of justice?  Or, is it a purely political maneuver to irrevocably damage a duly-elected President? A search for justice – or an exercise in vengeance?

If justice is a lady, where is she?

Looking into the recent past, there are multiple instances where Lady Justice was absent.

Here is a merely a short list: $12 billion in cash sent to Iraq that evaporated (2003); NSA Warrantless Surveillance (2001-2013); IRS improper targeting (2010-2013) of 501(c)(3) applications from conservative groups (Commissioner John Koskinen, below, still runs the IRS); Fast and Furious (2010); Associated Press Spying (2012); Clinton Foundation Pay-for-Play (2009-2013); Russian Uranium Deal (2009-2013) and the millions of dollars in donations that came to the Clinton Foundation from the participants; Clinton Private Email Server (2009-2013).

This list goes on before the earliest-dated episode, and after the latest.

Today the news is Russiagate. Meanwhile, where is the news about the Awan brothers?

If justice is a lady, where is she?

  • Without a complicit U.S. Department of Justice, there could be no Deep State.
  • Without a negligent U.S. Department of Justice there would be no Swamp to drain.
  • Without an unbiased and aggressive U.S. Department of Justice Qui Pro Domina Justitia Sequitur, there can be no justice.

Which is why, if freedom is to survive in America, the U.S. Department of Justice must be drained.
