Republican G-Men Trapped

Why are the three governors, Chris Christie, Jeb Bush, and John Kasich, trailing so far behind the field of Republican candidates for President of the United States? In part, the socio conservative and populist message has gained the upper hand in clouding experience with the establishment or the politics as usual guys. Can any one of G-Men get a move on, find a way out of the caboose, and derail the recent GOP momentum crisscrossing the American primaries? So far, the perpetuated pomposity of some frontrunners has outflanked and formed a mutual dislike of the G-Men that has typically presented a trending indictment of the perceived government-man. Ironically, the candidates leading the Republican pack include two senators with close ties to Washington. Senator Ted Cruz cannot seem to get along with others while Senator Marco Rubio has smooshed with the Democrats on immigration. Ben Carson, a well respected neuro-surgeon, lacks the demeanour to lead whereas business tycoon, Donald Trump, has clearly demonstrated the ability to lead, yet we are not always sure where he will lead us.
One can look back at the G-Men records, and their subsequent credentials and skills, in managing New Jersey, Florida, and Ohio; three high profile and challenging States. Their leadership require the G-Men to oversee the economy and state budget, implement tactical measures to minimize a terrorist threat, education, healthcare, and criminal justice –all top issues Americans care about and top issues playing out in the campaign debates. Each governors possesses a history and a record of account that can be assessed and promoted; yet the three amigos cannot crack into the top tier of leading Republican candidates. The four frontrunners have each successfully found their niche in coalescing a segment of the Republican Party with the G-Men tustling for the remaining fragments. Cruz has captured much of the socio-conservative and evangelical segment. Trump is the biggest show on earth that resonates with the built up tribal anger towards President Obama and America’s decline at home and abroad. Carson is an anomaly that has voters believing he is the most honest candidate and quite likeable to that of the many characters Morgan Freeman has played. Lastly, Rubio is the rising boy wonder that has taken a page out of the recently elected Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau’s rock star status. Marco is hip, Hispanic, energetic, and a new generation seen as the differential threat to the crusty fuddy-duddy candidates in the Democrat Party. The aurora surrounding of highly anticipated debates have virtually subdued the G-Men. Generally, if you listen attentively, the governors reply with very sound responses to the questions because for the most part, they have been there and done that. Yet, the hype and drama leading up to the debates has everyone enthralled with the ensuing cage match, the big Trump moment, and skirmishes with the moderators. The debates have become a sporting event with cheering and booing, followed by post-game highlights and media spin.

Can the Republican Party sift through the responses and external noise; and really determine who possesses the experience, skills, and greatest capability to collaboratively lead America in an ever complex world or will they focus on the attributes that solely measures a populist rebound to the Obama era over experienced leadership. Not all the blame, of course, can rest on a wound-up Republican electoral base. The G-Men have failed to make inroads with their local ground game and they have yet to air it out with an offensive strategy. They must expose the frontrunner’s lack of experience and leadership; and secondly, find a way to break out of the establishment caricature that has prevented the best prospect for a primary win. It is not enough to broadcast a litany of achievements as a governor during the debate where the viewer tunes out the exhaustive list as yesterday’s news. Rather the triumphs must instill passion and hope that is first derived from the added value the candidate convincingly conveys and offers in attracting new customers to the campaign. It’s time for the top advisors to study the tapes and do their homework. So far, and in all likelihood, the G-Men will remain maladroit in breaking through the systemic barriers erected by media’s staged drama focused on ratings, a populist message resonating for an outsider to lead, and their establishment persona as government men that really doesn’t exist anymore than the two senators leading in the race. The G-Men indeed possess the experience and wisdom to lead. Will Republicans look beyond the political and theatrical embellishments and bear down in making the best decision?
