Media pretty excited that hashtag jockeys want Captain America to be gay

Understand this about the media's pursuit of agendas: It's often not so much how they cover stories, as it is which stories they choose to cover at all. Let a bunch of people on social media start using the hashtag #IndictHillary, and I seriously doubt it gets any attention. A bunch of people on social media wanting something is not a story. Unless, of course, it gives the media an excuse to pay attention to something they already want to pay attention to. In that case, even something as stupid as idiots demanding that a fictional male character be given a boyfriend might qualify for the use of those precious reporting resources they keeping telling us they don't have enough of. Never fear, these brave defenders of sunlight will report the real news:
On Tuesday, the hashtag #GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend became a top trending topic on Twitter, which advocacy group GLAAD says is a sign that audiences are eager for significant LGBT characters in their superhero movies. This comes less than a month after GLAAD issued its annual studio responsibility index , which found that Walt Disney Studios, which owns Marvel, included zero LGBT characters in its films last year. "It’s getting increasingly difficult to ignore that LGBT people remain almost completely shut out of Hollywood’s big budget comic films that have dominated the box office over the past couple of years,” said Megan Townsend, GLAAD’s entertainment media strategist, who noted there are LGBT characters in both the source comics and in television adaptations, but not on the big screen. Tuesday’s trending was powered by both advocates and dissenters. Scores of Twitter users suggested that Steve Rogers/Captain America (Chris Evans) be paired up with his old friend Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), who has been a significant player in all three “Captain America” films. But other tweets decried the rallying call, stressing that the character has never been gay in the comic book source material.

Most blatant example of their bias in action

Maybe I'll start a hashtag campaign asking Marvel to make Captain America a Bible-quoting Christian, and see how much attention the media gives that. No. Just kidding. Of course I won't. Because I don't waste my time on nonsense just to get attention from the media. I also don't need Marvel Comics to affirm my beliefs, and I certainly won't demand that it does so because if it happened as a result of their being under pressure, what would be the value of that? Then again, what would be the value of it under any circumstances? If gay activists need a fictional superhero to be gay in order for them to feel they're making progress toward their goal . . . I'm not even sure what the goal is in that case. Nor do I think it matters much. Rob, who is more interested in this stuff than I am, tells me that this is entirely driven by the media and real fans either don't care or think the whole thing is stupid. I write this not because Captain America matters, but to demonstrate how the media will jump all over something that's completely stupid and irrelevant in order to push a point. Pay as much attention to what they cover as to how they cover it. It's the most blatant example of their bias in action.
