John Kerry on Air Conditioners and ISIS

Secretary of State John Kerry recently said that air conditioners and refrigerators are as big a threat to life as the threat of terrorism posed by groups like the Islamic State. (1) Careerist folks in government parrot the party-line message. Kerry has heard it from the top-down and buys into it. President Obama has said that global warming, not the Islamic State was the real threat. (2) Kerry was negotiating a global climate deal to phase out chemicals used as refrigerants in basic household and commercial appliances such as air conditioning and refrigerators, called hydrofluorocarbons, or HFCs. (3) He said that most of the substances banned in the Montreal Protocol have increased the use of HFCs and claimed that the coolant was thousands of times more potent than CO2. He added that the increase of HFCs has led to a threat of global climate change. (4)
He was talking about HFCs which replaced HCFCs, which in turn replaced CFCs, thanks to the Montreal Protocol of 1987. This succession of chemical refrigerants has reduced ozone destroying potential; but unfortunately they are all greenhouse gases. So now, HFCs must be eradicated, because a single molecule of HFC produces many thousand times the greenhouse effect of a molecule of CO2. What you don't hear is that the total forcing from the HFCs is less than one percent of that of CO2, reports Fred Singer. So, 'slaying the dragon amounts to slaying a mouse.' (1) One has to conclude that John Kerry has scrapped all his home and car air conditioners, his fridges and freezers and preserves his food in brine and sea salt. This is the same Kerry, who when a Senator from Massachusetts docked his family's $7 million yacht in neighboring Rhode Island, allowing him to avoid paying roughly $500,000 in taxes to his cash-strapped home state. He also avoided an excise tax bill of $70,000. (5) Apparently Kerry wasn't concerned about all the greenhouse gas he created driving to and from his berthed out-of-state yacht. One last note- His latest antics have led folks to create a petition to remove air conditioning from all US state property. As the petition says, you know it makes sense—air conditioners are as dangerous as suicide bombers. They must be stopped. Next up, refrigerators. (6) References
