Obama: You know, we Democrats are against this dark, divided, dystopian America that Trump wants

Earlier today I talked about how the media will sometimes take their cues from Democrats. That can work the other way around, too. When the media establishes a dishonest narrative, a clever Democrat will not only run with the narrative but build on it. That's basically what Obama did last night in his speech to the DNC. While Donald Trump's acceptance speech last Thursday night was all about the problems America faces and how he would approach the task of solving them, the news media portrayed it as a "dark" speech of "doom." I guess they prefer politicians who blow smoke up your # and tell you everything is wonderful when in fact it isn't. So Obama saw the perfect opportunity last night to not only run with that narrative but add something to it. In Obama's telling, it's not just that Trump thinks things are dark and gloomy. He wants them to be. He's actually proposing to make us more divided, more hateful, less hopeful, less united. These are the things Trump wants, according to Obama.
Check out this passage from the speech transcript:
Ronald Reagan called America “a shining city on a hill.” Donald Trump calls it “a divided crime scene” that only he can fix. It doesn’t matter to him that illegal immigration and the crime rate are as low as they’ve been in decades, because he’s not offering any real solutions to those issues. He’s just offering slogans, and he’s offering fear. He’s betting that if he scares enough people, he might score just enough votes to win this election. That is another bet that Donald Trump will lose. Because he’s selling the American people short. We are not a fragile or frightful people. Our power doesn’t come from some self-declared savior promising that he alone can restore order. We don’t look to be ruled. Our power comes from those immortal declarations first put to paper right here in Philadelphia all those years ago; We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal; that together, We, the People, can form a more perfect union. That’s who we are. That’s our birthright – the capacity to shape our own destiny. That’s what drove patriots to choose revolution over tyranny and our GIs to liberate a continent. It’s what gave women the courage to reach for the ballot, and marchers to cross a bridge in Selma, and workers to organize and fight for better wages. America has never been about what one person says he’ll do for us. It’s always been about what can be achieved by us, together, through the hard, slow, sometimes frustrating, but ultimately enduring work of self-government.

That bolded passage is especially rich coming from the guy who said that if we elected him he would "heal the planet" and cause the seas to recede. So is his idiotic comment that Americans "don't look to be ruled," coming from a guy who ignores the Constitution and dares Congress and the courts to do anything about it - knowing full well that they probably won't. We know that Obama loves to flog political strawmen, and this one is made about as totally from straw as you're ever going to find. Trump doesn't say we're fragile people. Democrats say that, which is why they constantly predict widespread disaster if government programs don't take care of everyone's needs. Trump doesn't position himself a self-declared savior. Obama did that. And Trump pointing out that America is divided - black vs. white, minorities vs. police, secular vs. Christian - is not Trump saying he wants this. It's Obama who wants this, and whose policies and public pronouncements have helped to make it happen. This entire speech presented a fictional reality, which makes perfect sense at a convention being held for the purpose of nominating the biggest liar ever to see the presidency. Just like when he defies the Constitution - knowing Congress and the courts will do nothing - Obama knows he can stand there and defy truth at the DNC, because neither the cheering delegates nor the hero-worshipping media will call him out for it.
