Chicago four charged with hate crime in awful video beating

I'm going to be consistent with my longtime position on hate crimes. I don't think there should be such a thing as a "hate crime." If you commit a crime against someone, it's the action you should be punished for, not for "hating" them or whatever other nefarious motive. That said, the fact that the Chicago Police Department chose moments ago to charge Jordan Hill, Tesfaye Cooper, Brittany Covington and Tanishia Covington with a hate crime in the video attack that everyone has now seen at least shows that they're no longer pretending the attack was neither racially nor politically motivated.
Here are the details as reported by NBC:
Four teenagers face hate crime, aggravated kidnapping and other felony charges in connection with the torture and beating of a bound and gagged man in Chicago broadcast live on Facebook. The 18-year-old suspects — identified as Jordan Hill, Tesfaye Cooper, Brittany Covington and Tanishia Covington — were charged Thursday ahead of an afternoon bond hearing. The charges also include aggravated unlawful restraint and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi had tweeted Thursday morning that authorities were continuing to investigate the "senseless attack. The attackers, who are black, were heard yelling anti-white epithets at various points throughout the 30-minute video.

As Rob told you earlier, the initial attempt by the CPD to pretend this wasn't motivated by politics or race was so absurd, there was probably no way it could be sustained for long. Regardless of what motivated these monsters, they need to be locked up for a very long time for what they did to this mentally challenged young man. Pray for him, by the way. It could take a long time for his to recover from the effects of a sadistic attack like this. At least he should be able to take solace in the fact that these bastards can't do it to him again. Black Lives Matter leader hit with restraining order after threatening LA police official By the way, kudos to the political left for not excusing this. I suppose that should be the minimum we expect of them, but when even Jesse Jackson is condemning it instead of making excuses for the attackers, I think we've achieved a rare moment of consensus on what basic humanity requires of all of us. I'm glad to see it.
