Trump's astonishing declaration: 'We are transferring power from Washington D.C., and giving it back to you, the people'

Well that was . . . amazing. I've never heard an inaugural address like that. There has never been an inaugural address like that. President Donald J. Trump stared down the entire Washington establishment - literally - and told them their time of hording power at the expense of the American people is over. He did it as he was surrounded by the very people who have kept this racket going for decades, knowing full well that they were cursing him under their breaths for it.
And he didn't care. On the day as a historical marker: "January 20, 2017 will be remembered as the day the people became the rulers of this country, once again. The forgotten people of America will be forgotten no longer." On where we've been, and how today changes things: "This American carnage stops right here, and right now." On his priorities: "From this day forward, a new vision will govern our land. From this day forward, it's going to be only America first, America first. Every decision on trade, on taxes, on immigration, on foreign affairs, will be made to benefit American workers, American families." On our approach to foreign affairs: "We will seek friendship with the rest of the world, but we do so with the understanding that it is the right of all nations to put their people's interests first." On his approach to fighting terrorism: Here's the full speech:

"We will united the civilized world against radical Islam, which we will eradicate from the face of the Earth." On why we should be confident of our security: "We will be protected by our military and by law enforcement, and most importantly, we will be protected by God." On the new standards he intends to impose on politicians: "We will no longer accept politicians who are all talk and no action, constantly complaining but never doing anything about it." This is not a departure from Trump's campaign themes. It was entirely consistent with them. But to hear it as an inaugural address was truly remarkable. And it wasn't a partisan speech at all. Trump didn't make a speech about how great Republicans are, and how awful Democrats are. He made a speech about how the political class in general has expertly consolidated its hold on power for its own benefit, and how he as president is going to put a stop to it. Now that is easier said than done, of course, but so is everything. The fact that he laid this out in his inaugural address shows that he sees it as a very high priority, and that he will judge his own actions and those of everyone around him according to whether they achieve this vision. As I'm writing this, I'm already listening to handwringing from the media - talking about how this will upset people and no one will support him. Whatever. Normal Americans feel what Trump said, and that's why he took erstwhile blue states like Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Because the political class has failed the working people in those states, and they were ready to try something different. Trump is nothing if not different. He proved that right out of the gate. This should be quite a four-year experience, America.
