Because as usual, there are things you're not being told: Trump is now president because today we do know how Obama governed, and someone has to do something about it

Let's talk about those side-by-side images of the Obama and Trump inauguration crowds:

This is all over social media this morning. Your liberal friends are very excited about posting it. And if you've seen it in raw form, you've probably felt a little discouraged by what you saw. OK, sure, maybe Trump will do good things, but dang, people sure aren't excited about him. Now, there is truth to that, and there's no question that the crowd for Obama's inaugural was bigger than the crowd for Trump's. But you're being very misled if you're reading much into the following video, offered to you by the pretentious young liberals at Vox who think you need them to "explain the news" to you:
Pay attention to the time stamps on the two images. The time stamp for the Trump inaugural was 11:04 a.m., nearly a full hour before the actual swearing-in. The time stamp for the Obama inaugural was 11:30 a.m. Now that doesn't mean that in the ensuing 26 minutes the Trump crowd swelled to the same size, but it's obviously not an apples-to-apples comparison. Any crowd for any event gets bigger as you get closer to event time. There's also another detail you're not being told. With the caveat that this comes from a totally untrustworthy bunch of liberal "fact-checkers," let's look at the historical numbers for recent inaugurals - particularly noticing the difference between Democrat crowds and Republican crowds:
Barack Obama, 2013: 1 million Barack Obama, 2009: 1.8 million (generally considered a record for people on the National Mall) George W. Bush, 2005: 400,000 George W. Bush, 2001: 300,000 Bill Clinton, 1997: 250,000 Bill Clinton, 1993: 800,000 George H.W. Bush, 1989: 300,000 Ronald Reagan, 1985: 140,000 tickets sold, but record cold moved the swearing-in ceremony indoors Ronald Reagan, 1981: 10,000, according to the New York Times. This was the first year the ceremony was performed on the west side of the Capitol.

A-ha, say your liberal friends! The nation gets more excited about Democrat inaugurations than Republican ones! Well, Washington does. Washington is a town packed with the stalwarts of the political class - bureaucrats, lobbyists, journalists, congressional staffers and the like. It's a town that votes 90 percent Democrat or better in every election. So sure, allowing for the fact that some people will travel for an inauguration, there's always going to be more local enthusiasm for a Democrat inauguration. The Democrats are very much the home team in Washington D.C. And for all kinds of reasons, Obama's inaugural had historic elements to it and that made for an absolute blowout of a public event. There's no denying that, and there's nothing to be gained by pretending it didn't happen. But the atmosphere of the 2009 inaugural lacked the context of what would happen in the ensuing eight years. Today the nation has very big problems that were made much worse by the governance decisions Obama made. If 2009 saw the nation filled with exuberant hope, 2017 sees us grappling with the reality that things really didn't go so well and now we've got a mess to clean up, which is one of the reasons we elected a president who is not so inspirational as he is the bull in a china shop that is probably necessary to get the job done. That's why I find it kind of funny that the left feels the need to give us a pair of photos, side by side, that are misleading. If the argument is over inaugural enthusiasm - 2009 Obama vs. 2017 Trump - there's no doubt who wins that contest. The problem for the left is that, given a chance to sign on for four more years of Obama's policies, the present-day electorate decided to pass, preferring to roll the dice on a most unconventional alternative. That's where we are in 2017. If you want to pine for the days when no one really knew how Obama would govern, knock yourself out. Trump is now president because today we do know how Obama governed, and someone has to do something about it.
