Wait, didn't they say that was "hostage taking" and "terrorism?"

Schumer, Democrats, threaten government shutdown over border wall

Back in 2013, when GOP members threatened a federal shutdown, they were called "terrorists" and "hostage takers." Brian Williams famously carped that “All kinds of people are getting cheated out of salaries, benefits, medical treatment.” That, in true Williams fashion, was a bald-faced lie, but it was the narrative the entire left-wing media decided to run with. As Mark Halpern admitted on MSNBC, the press was in Obama's pocket and they were going to help him sell the anti-Republican narrative.
It worked. The GOP took a temporary hit and, for the next few years, Republicans would cower any time someone said the word "shutdown." Now, the circumstances have been reversed. Having decimated their own party, Democrats are desperately searching for weapons with which to stall, delay, or derail the GOP agenda. Guess what they're threatening... That's right. A government shutdown. As the Washington Examiner reports:
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Democrats will not vote for a must-pass government funding bill next month if it includes money for construction of a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. “That will not stand,” Schumer, D-N.Y., warned Monday in a Senate floor speech. “It would be inappropriate in our judgement to insist on the inclusions of such funding in a must-pass appropriations bill that is needed by the Republican majority to avoid a government shutdown.” A short-term funding measure expires in April.

Republicans, who control majorities in both chambers, have not indicated what they plan to include in a bill that would fund the government for the remainder of the fiscal year. Some options include supplemental funding for the military or additional money for building the border wall that President Trump promised during his campaign. Schumer said if border wall funding is included, it would constitute a "poison pill" that Democrats would vote against.
So, even before he knows what will be included in the next spending bill, Chuck Schumer has decided he's ready to become a "terrorist" and "hostage-taker?" That's terrible. Surely the media is outraged! ...Of course they're not. This is barely being reported. If it's mentioned at all, it’s being portrayed as some sort of bold a righteous stand. Heck, Chris # (D-DE) even defended a potential shutdown as a "democratic weapon" on CNN. My position is the same as it always was. If you want to shut down the government, great. Go for it. Most of what the federal beast does is completely unnecessary, and I welcome any opportunity to show the American people that they really don't need their government as much as they've been lead to believe. The giant will slumber for a few days and, if you're in the private sector, you probably won't even notice.

Autonomy is a good thing, and a federal shutdown is a great way to celebrate it. Democrats hoping for a replay of 2013 should beware, though. The standard playbook, where the media carries your water, isn't necessarily going to work this time. Back then, the GOP was a weak minority party, saddled with mealy-mouthed leadership. Things are very different now. Border security is extremely popular. If the left tries to sell their shutdown as the fault of Republicans, they'll have the entire Trump administration coming at them with both barrels. He, and his congressional allies, will go straight to a public that has - in most of the country - already turned its back on the Democrat agenda. We're long past the days when Dems could move the needle by having CNN repeat their talking points.
