Pack your patience, folks? Health and tax reform are coming, but they'll take time

I understand that after eight years of you-know-who, people are impatient about things getting done and problems being solved. Democrat policies did a lot of damage to this country, and the sooner we can fix the damage the better. But take a step back. Donald Trump has been president for just over three months. We still don’t even have all his appointments confirmed. As much as the media obsesses over a president’s “first 100 days” for whatever reason, he was elected to serve four years. And the current session of Congress will be with us for two full years.
In other words, there’s a lot of time to make the good legislation that’s necessary to fix eight years of bad policy. And if you have very difficult problems to solve, it’s not such a bad idea to err on the side of being thorough rather than fast. Last week, Speaker Paul Ryan released a video announcing that the House is working on tax simplification that would allow you to file your taxes on a form the size of a postcard. That sounds like an excellent policy change, and the House’s tax-writing committees are holding hearings on the idea this week. Oh, by the way, a new proposal to repeal and replace ObamaCare is also working its way through committees. It’s possible we’ll see it within the next couple of weeks as well. I’m as eager as you are to see all these ideas, but as I told my friend Sean Hannity on his show last Wednesday night, pack your patience. You’ve got 435 cats to herd in the House and another 100 in the Senate. I realize you can pass these initiatives and others with just Republican votes – if they can hold the entire Republican caucus together. We saw during the initial push for the American Health Care Act how easy it is to do that. That doesn’t mean these proposals can’t be passed. Of course they can. But it means you need to take your time, get the legislation right and get buy-in from the various factions within your own party. If you can get Democrat support without compromising the quality of the bill, there’s nothing wrong with that. But chances are, if you need Democrat votes to pass it, there’s something seriously wrong with your plan. A Republican majority should be able to pass a good Republican idea on its own. But it takes time to get the bill right and garner the support you need.

I think there was some unrealistic optimism about how quickly a lot of this would get done, and to be honest, Republicans fed some of that outsized optimism. There was even talk that the ObamaCare repeal would get done a week after Trump took office. A week! Having seen how complicated this process is, it seems pretty silly now that anyone ever believed that. But I guess when you finally get back in power after eight years, you’re raring to go. These things will happen. But they will take time. And they should. That’s how it works when you’re being thorough and making sure you get it right. So pack your patience, folks. It’s much more important to do it right than to do it fast.
