Election 2016: Trump Trumped Romney in Deep Blue California Cities: Why?

The Sacramento Bee did their exhaustive study on how well Donald Trump did in all California cities compared to Mitt Romney in 2012. Trump did worse than Romney in a larger number of otherwise strongly Republican areas. But in the most unlikely cities, Trump actually exceeded Romney. Let's start with the first city of note, in part because I had attended a town hall in that city last weekend: Inglewood. Inglewood California is a decent microcosm of the political cancer that is eating out California. The city was a wellspring of growth and development. Barry Goldwater actually won Inglewood, even though he lost the rest of the state and 46 others.

Cities where Trump exceeded Romney

Then came the busing, the racially-charged policies of welfarism and government dependence. Crime became the norm, and “white flight” undermined the communities. A large phalanx of the Democracy began running this plantation—although Republican Gordon Hahn, uncle of Aunt Janice and former LA Mayor James Hahn—represented Inglewood in the state assembly in the early 1960s. Today, the city is rife with crime and underwhelming governance. The school district ended up in state receivership following decades of financial mismanagement. The test scores remain lousy while charter school enrollment continues to increase. Democrats are the norm, and Republicans just stay quiet, if there are any. Yet notice that in Inglewood, Trump did better than Romney, even though the Republican registration is abysmally low. Granted we are looking at Republican registration dipping below 10%. Notice also that the share of the vote is significantly larger for Compton, a city which has been overrun with crime, corruption, and a corrosive moral decline. It's as though every single Republican decided to step out and vote for Trump in those cities, even though in primary season they had to use booths clearly marked “Republican”.

Even in Oakland, Trump did slightly better

Even in Oakland, Trump did slightly better. A few reminders for anyone unfamiliar with California politics, especially in the East Bay section of Northern California:
  1. Congresswoman Barbara Lee is a bleeding-heart communist who welcomed Black Lives Matter into her office. She won her latest re-election with 90% of the vote against the former Alameda County Republican Party Chairwoman.
  2. Oakland Politics in particular is so heavily Democratic, that Republican Party leaders don’t even endorse Republican candidates in contested elections when a more moderate-leaning Democrat has the best chance of winning a seat.
  3. Governor Jerry Brown served as mayor of Oakland at one time, and during his tenure, Oakland turned into a quasi-police state
Why? Here are few reasons, starting with the most likely, and then moving to more speculative reasons: 1. These three cities are well-known black urban areas. The one issue which resonated with many black Democratic voters was immigration. The problems with illegal immigration, the undercutting of wages and jobs, and the high crimes rates in urban areas all impact black communities disproportionately. Consider what Chanell Temple shared at the Cudahy, California City Council meeting:

Black Trump Supporter "Black Community has been destroyed by RACIST ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION"

2. Since these liberal cities are progressive bastions pushing the Democratic Party to the left, Bernie voters in larger numbers might have voted for Trump out of pure rebellion against the Democratic nominee Crooked Hillary Clinton. A progressive Democratic voter in Colorado did the same thing, and she received a featured editorial in Politico. 3. The high crime rates, unemployment, and moral degradation have hit the community so hard, that slowly but surely they are walking off the Democratic Plantation and willing to try a Republican Presidential candidate. After all, Trump told disenfranchised voters "What do you have to lose?" 4. Education reforms. School choice is big among minority communities, especially in cities like Compton and Oakland. They want opportunities, not dependence. They have experienced the grinding frustration of dispirited bureaucracies frustrating their children’s future. Republicans have been on the front lines of taking on the teachers unions, which want to maintain the education status quo of loss, failure, low scores, and chronic unemployment and absenteeism. Immigration, jobs, crime, and education: these are basic necessities for a good city and a great state—and they are significantly lacking in California. The hardest-hit cities are majority minority, specifically for black Americans. Trump offered them more than lip service and a one-hour visit to the NAACP convention. If Republicans want to win big in blue cities in the upcoming elections, then they need to pay attention to the above issues--and not hold back!
