Robert Mueller is the wrong man to investigate President Trump

Well, the Democrats finally got their special counsel on the Russian 2016 scandal. Robert Mueller, formerly an FBI director and federal prosecutor, was appointed by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to investigate the alleged Russian efforts to interfere with the 2016 presidential campaign, and the alleged Trump administration collusion with the Russians. An appointment was probably a given, since, as always, when the Democrats and the mainstream media kick up a fuss, as they have 24/7 since Trump unexpectedly won the Nov. 8, 2016 election, it is to be expected that weak-kneed Republican officials, including Rosenstein, would eventually cave to their partisan demands. This time, history was made, as the Democrat-MSM propaganda campaign actually started several months before the president was inaugurated.
Needless to say, we are still waiting for a special counsel for any of numerous serious scandals under Democrat President Barack Obama – see Fast and Furious, Benghazi, IRS targeting, NSA surveillance, and so on. Aside from all this, however, the Mueller investigation is certainly one of the stranger special counsel situations ever seen. First of all, it is the only such investigation of a president and his administration to focus on an intelligence matter, and not on an actual criminal case. Mueller has been directed to investigate “any links and/or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated with the campaign of President Donald Trump.” He is also empowered to investigate “any related matters.” Normally, with such an investigation, a crime is alleged, and the special counsel – or special prosecutor, as it is usually named – examines the crime, seeking to discover enough evidence to meet the high standard of beyond a reasonable doubt. Normally, the special counsel must seek court approval to conduct such an investigation, and be wary of its target’s constitutional rights. This time, Mueller’s investigation is under no such constraints.

Second, it should be obvious to all but the most committed Never Trumper that Robert Mueller is the wrong man to be leading any type of investigation that involves James Comey. Comey is the former FBI director, the successor to Robert Mueller, whom Trump just fired in one of his latest “scandals” of the week. As a result, when it comes to the Trump administration, Comey can be expected to be very biased against the president. And according to Politico, Mueller and Comey have “one of the closest working relationships the top ranks of the Justice Department have ever seen.” They see each other as mentor (Mueller) and protégé (Comey). Now, Mueller is charged with conducting an objective investigation of the president who sacked his own protégé. Even more shocking, during the George W. Bush administration, Mueller was so close to Comey that he once threatened to quit as FBI director to protect then-Deputy Attorney General Comey’s job. This fact alone should be disqualifying for the appointment. And that doesn’t even take into account the allegation from former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales that Comey, and by implication Mueller too, is a fabricator of questionable honesty who worked with the Democrats to sabotage the Bush administration. None of this will end well for President Trump.

BombThrowers——

Bombthrowers is a blog about politics and the war for the hearts and minds of Americans from a conservative viewpoint.

In line with our name, we do not hold back. We have a take-no-prisoners attitude when it comes to fighting for conservative principles. The Left doesn’t play nice, and that’s why they’ve been winning. It’s time for conservatives to rise up and turn the tide.

We’re not afraid to take on anyone, especially the Washington Establishment—Republican or Democrat.

Bombthrowers is a project supported by the Capital Research Center. Its editor-in-chief is Matthew Vadum.
