Stuart Saves his Senate Seat

Al Franken becomes latest Democrat to reject running against Trump in 2020

For whatever reason, people in Minnesota really seem happy with their decision to keep Al Franken in Congress. Despite his nebulous messages, boring demeanor, and uniformly terrible speeches on the Senate floor, he trounced his GOP rival in 2014 and remains bafflingly popular. Couple that with the whole "famous comedian" thing and you had what many on the left thought was a recipe for a presidential run. We've been hearing rumors almost since Franken claimed his Senate seat - at least as far back as 2010 - mostly due to the fact that Dems have an incredibly shallow bench. You may recall that back in February, the National Journal was hyping Franken as the left's possible 2020 savior. However, Franken has now made it clear that it's not going to happen. He'll have to hang on to his one man mobile uplink unit, because he seems to realize he's not good enough, not smart enough, and (Minnesota aside) people don't like him.
In at-home interviews for this week’s issue of PEOPLE (on newsstands Friday), the Franken family was unusually definitive in shutting down this spring’s buzz about Al, 66 and a former writer and performer on Saturday Night Live, being a contender for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination. … “Yeah, I’m not going to do that,” says Franken. “It’s not going to happen,” adds his daughter, Thomasin, 36. The senator’s wife, Franni, puts it most simply: “No.”
That's about as crystal clear as these sorts of denials get. In fairness to Franken, a presidential race is a miserable slog. He has enough money, doesn't seem like a guy who's after immense amounts of power, and probably doesn't want to face life under the brutal microscope that comes with a White House bid. On top of all that, Democrats are still facing this map...(Below) ...So, you have to wonder why any comfortable Democrat would risk a cushy Senate seat for a dubious presidential endeavor.
