America's Real News is in the Numbers

Ignorance of basic economic principles in most American newsrooms contributes to the scarcity of real news today. A wise and worldly friend recently asked, "Where is the news today?" A hard question. It's easier to answer where news isn't. It's seldom found on televisions, radio, or in print. Real news is recoverable from the internet--that is, for the surfer who rides select sites. But most of us don't have the time, or inclination, to ferret out and validate real news. So we search the most readily available sources which--like cheap, fast food--offer the advantage of quick accessibility. It may not be good for us, but it's filling.
Much of the news served up in America today ridicules critical thinking--a taught and learned skill, conspicuous by its absence in today's John Dewey-bred, U.S. public school system where the primary goal of the academic sausage factory is to grind out graduates. Pink Floyd didn't discover that curriculum deficiency, but they did put it in a song:
We don't need no education We don't need no thought control No dark sarcasm in the classroom Teachers leave them kids alone Hey! Teachers! Leave them kids alone! All in all it's just another brick in the wall. All in all you're just another brick in the wall. Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2
Consequently, we have legions of reporters who breathlessly rush from one "bombshell," "block-buster," "revelation" leaked by an "anonymous, inside source" to another, in search of that coveted brick in their wall of fame--an "Exclusive." Today, Americans are fed a steady diet of tabloid journalism that mirrors the faux authenticity of a Reality TV Show where "reality" is contrived and choreographed; it's fake drama. Now, consider the evolutionary life cycle of the popular meme "fake news."

The term was coined in Northeast corridor newsrooms--from NYC to D.C.--in order to discredit, by ridicule, the suggestion of any connection between prominent, Democrat, political persons with any alleged, nefarious happenings associated with a pizza joint in the D.C. Swamp. "Fake news" was born the day a 20-something guy from North Carolina fired a rifle inside Comet Ping Pong Pizza because, it was reported, he thought children were being held hostage there. He--the shooter--gave The Washington Post a smoking-gun opportunity to label as "fake" any investigation into the pizza restaurant. Consequently, any inquiry associated with Pizzagate became a fool's search to confirm a fake conspiracy theory. But, ironically, the "fake news" worm turned. The originators of its first use are now tagged as "fake news" sources based on their intrepid fetish to document alleged Russian interference in the 2016 Presidential election to help Trump win. (AKA: Kremlingate). When the wise and worldly friend asked, rhetorically, "Where is the news today," he knew the answer. It's un-, under-, and mis-reported. And nowhere is that more so than in matters pertaining to the U.S. economy. For example, national reporters will focus on the upcoming 2017 Annual Budget Dance Festival held in the D.C. Swamp. Much sound-and-fury-signifying-nothing will accompany fake news warnings of doom as, say the reporters, the U.S. government dangerously flirts with the notion of defaulting on its debts. The pols and papers in D. C. will dust off their dog-eared scripts from previous debt festivals and, as before, issue dire warnings to a public gone numb to the threat.

Unfortunately, in the long-run, it fosters a dangerous numbness, for there is a genuine economic threat to America in sovereign debt default. Ask most any reporter for a definition of sovereign debt default and the response is likely to be crickets--unless they live in Puerto Rico. (Reporters in Illinois and California will learn of its meaning first, as their state governments circle the debt drain.) While today's Left Stream Media chase a Black Swan chimera they imagine in a possible Trump impeachment, they are ignorant of the real news that America's Black Swan is Arithmetic. Many of the warning signs are found here, on a living website where the numbers keep changing. In screen shots below, frozen at the time of this writing, here are a few samples of real news found in the numbers. Too much of everything else that purports to be real news today is just...white noise.
