Yesterday, I said I might have to eat my words on the "Kid Rock runs for Senate" story. I was pretty sure it was a publicity stunt designed to put the spotlight on a forthcoming release. I'm still not entirely convinced that this thing is real, but the Michigan rapper did release a statment yesterday that inches the needle twoard the idea that this might be real.
Last night, on his facebook page, he posted the following message and picture:
Once again the press is wrong. First of all, I’ve got 15 days from my announcement to file paperwork with the FEC! Second, I’m not signed to Warner Bros!!! - which simple fact-checking would have revealed. I have recently worked out a unique deal with BMG, Broken Bow, CAA and Live Nation to release music ON MY TERMS. Like politicians write books during their campaigns, I'm planning on putting out music during mine and IT ALL STARTS TONIGHT AT MIDNIGHT. It's not a hoax, it's a strategy and marketing 101! No plans for an album or anything else that has been the usual norm in the music business OR politics…..and…..
Senator Stabenow and I do share a love of music, although probably not the same kind. I concede she is better at playing politics than I am so I'll keep doing what I do best, which is being a voice for tax paying, hardworking AMERICANS and letting politicians like her know that We the People are sick and tired of their bullshit! “I am the captain now.” #fakenews #kidrockforsenate #kidrock #podunk #greatestshowonearthKid Rock inches closer to a real Senate run, but... A couple of things: A: He's wrong about the 15 days thing. His 15 day timer doesn't start from his announcement, it starts from the time he raises his first $5,000. Given the speed with which most of the swag - again on the Warner Music site - sold out, the clock is ticking.
He’s got a new album coming down the pike, the delayed follow-up to “First Kiss.” After originally shooting for a 2016 release, Rock continued working on the project — at one point even scrapping much of the existing material and starting from scratch, according to sources close to the musician. He has spent the past year burrowed in Nashville finishing the record. The delay took Kid Rock out of the two-year working cycle that long marked his career: release an album and tour for a year, lay low the next year, repeat. Having toured in 2015, he'd have been out on the road this summer if the initial release plan had stuck. As it stands, a tour in support of the new album would mean heading out later this year or in 2018.OK, fine, the singer says there's no plan for an album, and maybe he dumped Warner, and maybe somehow, he's planning to release music, perform, and run for office simultaneously. ...But that sounds like the kind of tall order that strains credibility. As I said yesterday, Kid Rock is beloved in Michigan and, while it remains to be seen if his kind of fame will translate to votes, I don't doubt that he has a shot at pulling off a win. Lord knows you can't do much worse than Debbie Stabenow, and there's a part of me that would take a genuinely perverse joy in watching a Stabenow / Kid Rock debate, so if he's really decided to make the jump, well...it should at the very least be entertaining. That said, until I see an actual FEC filing, you can color me extremely skeptical.
