Someone hired these two to be their babysitters?

If these are the babysitters, who are the parents? Then again, maybe I'd be happier not knowing: Officers were called to a Speedway gas station in Elyria, Ohio around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday after someone reported that the children were in the back of the truck. A 2-year-old was already being treated for heat exhaustion.

Five children ranging in ages from 2 to 15 years old were found in the back of the U-Haul with 25-year-old Jamie Adkin. The youngest child was taken to University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center in Elyria before being air lifted to University Hospitals Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland for further treatment. The other children went to a nearby hospital but didn't have any major injuries. However, the children did have bed bugs, lice and fleas on them, according to the police report. The witness, a man who works for the City of Elyria, told police that he went inside the gas station to buy a Gatorade. When he walked out, he saw the back of the U-Haul open. The witness intervened when he saw the children and one adult start to load back into the truck. My 16-year-old son, who has excellent discernment, took one look at them and said, "You can see the legion." If you get it, you'll get it right way. If you don't, you never will.

I'm not sure I have tremendously profound point to prove here. I just think sometimes it's useful to be reminded that certain people simply aren't right - and to ponder a) how they got that way; and b) who or what is enabling them to somehow function in society - let alone presume to act as a caregiver for anyone else. There are those who would argue that I'm judging them unfairly based on what they look like. But the facts of the story aside, there's always more you can see that just what you can see, if you know what I mean. I suppose chances are you don't. Anyway, kudos to the guy who called it in, and to the responders who made sure the kids were OK. I don't like the idea of the state getting involved in family situations, and maybe this one doesn't justify a large-scale intervention either. I don't want to prejudge it just because whoever is these kids' legal guardian(s) left them in this trainwreck of a situation. But for crying out loud, what could you possibly have to do that's so important it would justify leaving your kids with these people while you went and did it? Just hazarding a guess here, but I'm going to say that anyone who was friends with these two didn't have anything to do that was anywhere near that important.
