President Donald Trump has nominated sixteen individuals to federal judgeships

Federal Judge Nominees and Constitution Day

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- As Americans prepare to celebrate Constitution Day and commemorate the 230th anniversary of the U.S. Constitution's formation and signing on September 17, 1787, President Donald Trump has nominated sixteen individuals to federal judgeships, two of whom have practiced in the area of religious liberty and are committed to the original meaning of the Constitution and the rule of law. If confirmed, Matthew J. Kacsmaryk of Texas will serve as a District Judge on the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas. Kacsmaryk is Deputy General Counsel to First Liberty Institute, where his practice focuses on religious liberty litigation in federal courts and amicus briefs in the U.S. Supreme Court. He earned his J.D. with honors from the University of Texas School of Law in 2003 and his B.A., summa cum laude, from Abilene Christian University in 1999.
Jeff Mateer of Texas, if confirmed, will serve as a District Judge on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. Mateer currently serves as the First Assistant Attorney General of Texas, where he oversees the Office of Attorney General of Texas, including supervision of the State's active litigation matters. Before entering public service, Mateer was general counsel and executive vice president of the First Liberty Institute, where his practice focused primarily on defending religious liberty. Mateer earned his B.A. with honors from Dickinson College and his J.D. with honors from Southern Methodist University School of Law. "Two hundred and thirty years ago, America's Founders penned the Constitution and today it stands as the world's oldest constitution still in use," said Mat Staver, Founder and Chairman of Liberty Counsel. "While other countries have experienced revolution or many constitutions, our Constitution has survived the test of time. But our Constitutional Republic is threatened when judges make up the law rather than interpret the law. It is shocking to hear recently retired Federal Court of Appeals Judge Richard Posner boast that he did not follow rules, precedent, the Supreme Court or the Constitution. He focused only on his desired result and felt he was not bound by any law. This kind of judge is not a judge but a legislator. We have too many like Posner on the bench and it is time to replace them with judges who will adhere to the written Constitution and the rule of law," said Staver. "As we celebrate Constitution Day, it's the perfect time to return this country back to the rule of law where judges interpret the original meaning of the Constitution and the laws before them. President Trump's nomination of Matthew Kacsmaryk and Jeff Mateer is a positive step in that direction," said Staver.
