Bill Maher: People hate Democrats because they're a bunch of cradle-to-grave nanny state goons

The Democratic Party is the party of regulation. To be more precise, they're the party of all-encompassing, cradle-to-grave, nanny state, power mad, control freaks who long ago decided that every nanosecond of your personal life should be a federal issue. It's not going well for them. Thanks to their insistence that the American people are a bunch of morons whose day-to-day activities need to be constantly overseen, Dems are at their lowest level of power in a hundred years. ...And it doesn't look like things are going to turn around any time soon. They're facing a brutal 2018 map and, so far at least, their 2020 presidential frontrunner is "please somebody save us."
Bill Maher just came dangerously close to admitting all of that in a segment that began with a rant about child safety warning lights in cars, but quickly spread to the Dems near-total failure. Maher says that the liberal instinct toward over-regulation “makes people hate us. It makes me hate us." “People want to drain the swamp, not ban Big Gulps. Yes, I understand you have 1,000 good ideas on how I should live my life, check my privilege, and sort my recycling. And we’ll get to that, but first we need to get some Democrats elected and that’s hard when the movement to childproof the world had made Republicans the party of freedom and Democrats the party of poopers." By the end of his tirade, he veers back into standard left-wing tropes about guns and global warming, but the crux of his opinion is sound. Democrats desperately seek to control a populace they believe to be little more than abject morons and - outside of California and New York - the "morons" aren't having it. Even in rare cases where Democrats may have a point, people have grown accustomed to rejecting them because they know it's the first step on the slippery slope. Dems never stop with their first - possibly good - instinct. They always overplay their hand in their quest to empower the federal beast. It's worth a listen, even if only to prove the old saw about a broken clock having the correct time twice a day.
