Lakeridge Health faces steep increases to electricity bills

TORONTO, ON: Documents obtained by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) reveal that the electricity bills for Lakeridge Health have faced a steep increase over the last six years. The documents show bills that are increasing, growing from $3,296,125 in 2011-12 to $4,367,956 in 2016-17, an increase of nearly 33 per cent.
In addition to the increases for the Oshawa, Bowmanville, Port Perry and Whitby sites of Lakeridge Health, the newly integrated Ajax Pickering hospital (formerly a part of Rouge Valley Health), saw in increase of $578,832, or over 66 per cent. That brings the total the newly integrated Lakeridge Health has been forced to overpay for electricity to $1,650,663. “How is Lakeridge Health expected to manage their budget when electricity bills have risen by over a million dollars?” asked CTF Ontario Director, Christine Van Geyn. “The more the hospitals have to spend keeping their lights on, the fewer resources they have for patients.” Ontario has seen dramatic increases to the cost of electricity, with bills for residential consumers more than doubling in the last decade. “Families across the province all feel the pain of rapid increases to the cost of electricity when they pay their home electricity bill. But what many people don’t think about is the cost of the Ontario government’s failed electricity policy to the institutions we all rely on, like Lakeridge Health,” continued Van Geyn. “Instead of paying an extra $1.6 million for inflated electricity bills, Lakeridge Health could have paid to medically treat 141 cases of sepsis. That’s something that Ontario patients expect their health care system to spend money on, rather than wasting money on this government’s hydro rip-off.” The documents detailing Lakeridge Health’s electricity bills can be found HERE.
