Letters: Marine Major Fred Galvin’s Case

From Family Security Matters I would like to thank you for the first truthful and “positive” article re: my brother Fred Galvin’s case.

Your experience as a former Marine lends credibility and relevance to the article. As you mentioned, it is too often that the media shamelessly drags individuals through the mud for months but fail to restore the honor they deserve when the outcome sheds light to a much different situation. If writers even mention anything, it is an insignificant blurb on page 10. Growing up, we were raised to admit our mistakes, swallow our pride, and apologize to the face of the person that we have hurt or shown disrespect toward. I would be ashamed if I were so foolish as to publish biased information that libeled an individual’s reputation that I later found out was untrue…it would only be natural and dignified to publicly apologize. I would be a fool to wait for this to happen though. When I read your article, it was the best delivery that we had received. Hopefully it will restore pride to the heroes who deserve honor not shame. From the lies that were handed to them, the media stripped from these fine men the respect they were due. Earlier this month I attended my brother’s reception. It was a difficult to fight back the tears as I watched numerous Marines who have served with him share personal stories from their experiences with Fred. I have always been proud of my big brother, but I was especially honored that day to be associated with him. These men shared how they credited Fred with saving their lives…he is one of the few soldiers at his rank who is actually humbled to serve side by side in the dirt with his subordinates – not hiding behind a desk giving orders. Anyone who has ever known him understands patriotism, honor and loyalty – I honestly don’t know an individual who demonstrates these attributes quite like him. When we were in grade school my mother took Fred on a trip to Washington D.C. - from that moment on, he was enamored by his founding fathers and the sacrifices that were made – he made a conscious decision as a child to serve his country, and at 17-years-old he had his dream come true when my mom signed the authorization to allow him to serve in the United States Marine Corps. He started off as an enlisted Marine but by his 27th birthday, he moved to Quantico to become a commissioned officer. Fred is devoted to his country out of respect and patriotism, not out of carving a political career for himself. Too many selfish people end up at the top and are interested in covering their own a**es to stay there. Kearney should be “deeply shamed” by his own insidious, outlandish comments. His remarks have “put a stain on the forces’ honor” of all those who serve. Thank you again for painting the appropriate picture of the heroic actions of the fine men of Fox Company. Sincerely, Courtney Galvin-Kern
